Orioles recall Eades

The Orioles have recalled right-hander Ryan Eades from Triple-A Norfolk this afternoon as the latest pitcher to enter their bullpen.

Eades replaces left-hander Ty Blach, who was optioned to Norfolk following last night's 7-1 loss to the Rays.

Blach worked four innings and the Orioles don't have a pressing need for a fifth starter with two off-days next week.

Eades could become the 55th player used by the Orioles, one short of the club record set last season. He'd also be the 38th pitcher.

Executive vice president and general manager Mike Elias selected Eades, 27, off waivers from the Twins on Aug. 14 while the club was in New York. Eades made his major league debut earlier in the year and appeared in two games, blanking the Tigers on two hits over two innings on June 8 at Comerica Park and the Mariners on two hits over 1 2/3 on June 12 at Target Field. He walked two batters and struck out five.

The Orioles got Eades ready by giving him two relief appearances with Norfolk, where he tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings with two hits, one walk and one strikeout. His last appearance was three days ago against Gwinnett.

The Twins selected Eades in the second round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft out of LSU. He appeared in 29 games this season with Triple-A Rochester, including two starts, and went 4-3 with a 5.51 ERA and 1.480 WHIP.

He averaged 2.8 walks and 11.2 strikeouts per nine innings with Rochester.

The LSU rotation included Eades, former Orioles first-round pick Kevin Gausman and Phillies first-rounder Aaron Nola.

Eades has been assigned uniform No. 36. He became the first player in major league history to wear No. 80 while debuting with the Twins.
