The Orioles filled out their 40-man roster this afternoon while again addressing pitching depth in the minors by claiming left-hander D.J. Snelten off waivers from the Giants and optioning him to Triple-A Norfolk.
Snelten, 26, was designated for assignment on May 28. He made his major league debut in Game 2 of an April 28 doubleheader against the Dodgers.
In four appearances with the Giants, Snelten allowed five earned runs and six total with nine hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out four batters and surrendered two home runs.
The Giants selected Snelten in the ninth round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Minnesota. He's listed at 6-foot-6 and 240 lbs.
Snelten is 25-22 with a 3.14 ERA and 1.325 WHIP in six minor league seasons. He's made 42 starts among 161 appearances.
Left-handers hit .217 against Snelten in Triple-A this season and right-handers hit .196.
The Orioles had an opening on their 40-man roster, so no corresponding move was necessary.
Meanwhile, the Orioles selected Single-A outfielder Ryan McKenna as their minor league Player of the Month for May and Single-A Delmarva right-hander Matthias Dietz as Pitcher of the Month.
McKenna, 21, batted .397/.470/.586 with 11 doubles, a triple, three home runs and 22 RBIs in 28 games. Dietz, 22, was 3-0 with a 1.17 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in four starts. He allowed only three runs and struck out 24 batters in 23 innings.
