The Orioles begin their fall instructional league camp this morning in Sarasota, Fla., and players gathering at the Ed Smith Stadium complex include 19 that MLBPipeline.com ranks among the top 30 prospects in the organization.
One of the headliners is outfielder Heston Kjerstad, the second-overall pick in the 2020 draft who hasn't been able to play since his diagnosis of myocarditis following his selection. He's been taking batting practice and is now cleared for an increase in baseball activities.
Kjerstad, tabbed as the No. 7 prospect, is joined by outfielder Colton Cowser (No. 5), the Orioles' first-round pick in 2021 who played in the rookie-level Florida Complex League and for low Single-A Delmarva this summer and batted a combined .375/.490/.492 with eight doubles, two home runs and 34 RBIs in 32 games.
Pitcher DL Hall, a first-rounder in 2017 and No. 3 prospect who was shut down this summer with a stress reaction in his left elbow, is moving his rehab to the instructional camp. The same goes for pitcher Carter Baumler, a fifth-rounder in 2020 who's recovering from Tommy John surgery.
The roster also includes infield prospects Gunnar Henderson, Jordan Westburg, Adam Hall, Darell Hernaiz, Coby Mayo, Joey Ortiz and Anthony Servideo - the latter two recovering from shoulder and sports hernia surgeries, respectively.
Seventeen players from the 2021 draft are in camp.
Top 2021 international signees Samuel Basallo and Maikol Hernández also are in Sarasota. Basallo, a catcher from the Dominican Republic, received a $1.3 million bonus, the largest given out by the Orioles. Hernández, a shortstop from Venezuela, received $1.2 million.
MLBPipeline.com rates Hernández as the No. 19 prospect in the system and Basallo 24th.
