Orioles shut out in BBWAA awards

Leading the majors in home runs has its privileges, but it doesn't guarantee hardware in the offseason.

Orioles first baseman Chris Davis is not a finalist for the American League Most Valuable Player award, the announcement coming tonight from the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Third baseman Manny Machado also is excluded.

Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain, Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson and Angels center fielder Mike Trout are the finalists. The winner will be revealed on Nov. 19 on MLB Network.

A free agent after 4 1/2 seasons with the Orioles, Davis batted .262/.361/.562 with 31 doubles, 47 home runs, 117 RBIs, 84 walks and 208 strikeouts in 160 games this season. His 117 RBIs ranked third in the majors and his .562 slugging percentage ranked seventh.

Davis' 47 home runs are the fourth-most in club history. He also ranks first with 53 in 2013, followed by Brady Anderson with 50 in 1996 and Frank Robinson with 49 in 1966. Davis also passed Melvin Mora for 10th place on the Orioles all-time home run list with 161.

Davis finished third in MVP voting in 2013 after batting .286/.370/.634 and leading the majors with 53 home runs and 138 RBIs.

Machado, a Gold Glove finalist, is the only player in the majors to appear in every game. He batted .286/.359/.502 with 30 doubles, 35 home runs, 86 RBIs and 102 runs scored.

Machado notched the seventh 20/20 season (home runs and stolen bases) in club history and the second 30/20 season.

The BBWAA awards are determined by balloting from two members per each league city submitted before the playoffs.

In his first season with the Blue Jays, Donaldson batted .297/.371/.568 with 41 doubles, two triples, 41 home runs and 123 RBIs. He led the American League in RBIs and total bases (352) and the majors in runs scored (122).

Trout, who won the award in 2014 after placing second the two previous seasons, batted .299/.402/.590 with 32 doubles, six triples, 41 home runs, 90 RBIs and 104 runs scored. His .590 slugging percentage and .991 OPS led the American League.

Cain made his first All-Star team and batted .307/.361/.477 for the world champion Royals. He added 34 doubles, six triples, 16 home runs, 72 RBIs, 28 stolen bases and 101 runs scored.

Buck Showalter was named AL Manager of the Year in 2014, but the Orioles are shut out in 2015.
