Orioles vs. the postseason

TORONTO - The Rogers Centre roof will be open for tonight's wild card game. If you made a prop bet, "closed" was the wrong choice.

Which current Oriole carries the highest career postseason batting average? Hint: He won't be in the lineup.

Utility man Ryan Flaherty is 9-for-32 for a .281 average, including two home runs, five RBIs and four walks.

Which Oriole is due to break out? Center fielder Adam Jones is going to get lots of unwanted attention after going 8-for-53 (.151) in 13 games, with only one home run, four RBIs, three walks and 15 strikeouts.

jones-throws-gray-front-sidebar.jpgJones was 2-for-23 in five games against the Yankees in the 2012 American League Division Series, and he's still in recovery mode. He was 4-for-16 with a home run and three RBIs while the Orioles were swept by the Royals in the 2014 Championship Series.

Anyone remember Eddie Murray going 4-for-26 against the Pirates in the 1979 World Series? Didn't matter that he hit a home run, or that he was 5-for-12 with a home run against the Angels in the ALCS. His failures in the World Series stuck to him until he homered twice in the decisive Game 5 of the 1983 World Series versus the Phillies, the Orioles' last championship.

Murray was 6-for-15 in the 1996 ALDS versus the Indians, but I doubt if many people remember it.

Jonathan Schoop is 4-for-21 with a double and two RBIs in seven playoff games. He was 1-for-11 in the 2014 ALDS.

J.J. Hardy is 18-for-76 (.237) with five doubles and a home run.

Chris Davis and Matt Wieters missed the 2014 playoffs for, well, different reasons. Davis went 4-for-24 with two RBIs and nine strikeouts in 2012 and Wieters was 3-for-24 with a double.

Pedro Alvarez was 6-for-23 (.261) with a double, three home runs, seven RBIs and 10 strikeouts with the Pirates. He went 6-for-17 with a double, three home runs and six RBIs against the Cardinals in the 2013 NLDS.

Michael Bourn, who could start in right field tonight if manager Buck Showalter chooses defense, is appearing in the playoffs with his fourth team, including the Phillies, Braves and Indians. He's 1-for-10 with an RBI.

Drew Stubbs is 5-for-29 with a double, triple and RBI. He appeared in the 2010 and 2012 playoffs with the Reds and the 2015 playoffs with the Rangers.

Caleb Joseph is 2-for-9 with an RBI. He went 2-for-6 against the Royals, which qualified as a hot bat in that series.

Mark Trumbo, Nolan Reimold, Hyun Soo Kim and Trey Mancini are newbies to the postseason. Trumbo may come as a bit of a surprise. Kim is playing his first season in North America. Mancini appeared in his first five major league games in September and homered in his first three starts.

Mancini is enjoying the ride (plus other notes)
