Random thoughts (updated)

This just in: Vladimir Guerrero swung at the first pitch with a runner on third base and two outs in the first inning. He also swung at the third and fourth, striking out to strand Brian Roberts. The Orioles came close to taking a 1-0 lead, but Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira made a leaping catch to rob Derrek Lee. Lee hit another ball to the right side. It's been a fairly common occurrence over the first 10 games. Say what you want about Matt Wieters' offense - and I'm also disappointed that he hasn't been a huge force at the plate - but he threw out another runner tonight, cutting down Yankees leadoff hitter Brett Gardner at second base. It was another perfect throw from Wieters, who's 3-for-6 against runners trying to steal. The bat remains in question, but there's nothing wrong with Wieters' arm speed. Chris Tillman needed the help. He allowed singles to the first three batters and served up a three-run homer to Alex Rodriguez. It's bound to happen when you fall behind, 2-0, to A-Rod and get a fastball up over the plate. Tillman turns 23 on Friday, which will stop us from saying, "He's only 22." To Tillman's credit, he's never used his age as an excuse. This game might take years off my life. Modern Family starts at 9 p.m. Don't make me choose. Update: Tillman is charged with six runs and nine hits in 1 2/3 innings. You have to wonder if his next start is in jeopardy, or if the rotation isn't deep enough for him to leave it. Earlier today, Double-A Bowie defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 4-1. Ronnie Welty hit his second homer in two games. Billy Rowell, starting at first base again with Joe Mahoney out of the lineup, went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Caleb Joseph and Carlos Rojas also had two hits and an RBI. Zach Clark (UMBC) picked up the win with five scoreless innings. Josh Bell drove in two runs for Triple-Norfolk with a first-inning single off former Oriole Rodrigo Lopez. Manny Machado struck out in his first at-bat for Single-A Delmarva, and his average is down to .333. He's only 18.
