Roberts homers for first time in more than two years (O's lose 5-2)

It's been a while. Brian Roberts, making only his fifth start of the season, gave the Orioles a 1-0 lead over the White Sox tonight with a home run in the top of the third inning. Roberts lined an 89 mph fastball from left-hander John Danks over the fence in left field, his first home run since April 13, 2011 off former Yankee A.J. Burnett. Roberts has nine career home runs against the White Sox, the third-most against any opponent. He's hit 14 vs. the Yankees and 11 vs. the Rays - both division opponents. Roberts is now 7-for-15 with three RBIs in his five games, and he's 9-for-23 with five RBIs lifetime against Danks. He also made a nice barehanded pickup and throw across his body tonight to retire Alexei Ramirez in the third inning. He figures to stay in the lineup, either at second base or as the designated hitter. The White Sox are starting three southpaws in this series, which will keep Ryan Flaherty on the bench. Jason Hammel has five strikeouts in three innings. He's also allowed four hits. Adam Jones is 0-for-2 tonight, stranding two runners, and 1-for-26 against Danks. Update: Conor Gillaspie scored the tying run in the fourth inning on Gordon Beckham's single and gave Chicago a 2-1 lead in the sixth on a solo home run. Gillaspie is 3-for-3 lifetime against Hammel. Small sample size, but it matters tonight. Hammel has allowed two runs and seven hits in six innings, with one walk and six strikeouts. Update II: The White Sox scored three runs in the seventh, the last two on a long home run by Adam Dunn, to increase their lead to 5-1. Hammel hasn't won since May 27 and he's not in position to end that streak. Hammel has allowed 10 homers in his last six starts. Update III: Adam Jones had an RBI single in the eighth, but the Orioles lost 5-2 and failed to move a season-high 12 games above .500. The Orioles' winning streak ends at four games. Kevin Gausman allowed a hit and struck out a batter in the bottom of the eighth. Nick Markakis had three hits.
