Roster move, tonight's game and other stuff

The Orioles are prepared to make another roster move today, with Rey Navarro summoned to Baltimore following Triple-A Norfolk's game last night against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Ryan Flaherty isn't fully recovered from his groin injury and it may be wise to shut him down until he's right. The Orioles value his defense, especially at second base, but this is the type of injury that could linger all season.

Navarro is on the 40-man roster, which makes for an easy corresponding move. And Steve Pearce is a capable replacement at second base.

tillman-pitching-alds-white-sidebar.pngChris Tillman will make his third start against the Blue Jays this season. He figures that it's got to get better.

Tillman is 0-2 with an 18.00 ERA in two starts, allowing 14 runs and 12 hits over seven innings, with eight walks, four strikeouts and three home runs.

The pattern continues for Tillman this season. One run over 6 2/3 innings, seven runs over 2 2/3, one run over 5 1/3, seven runs over 4 1/3, two runs over seven and four runs (and 10 hits) over 5 2/3.

He's due for a good one tonight.

Left-handers are hitting .323 against Tillman this season. He's held them to a .254 average over his career.

Does Jose Bautista return to the Blue Jays lineup tonight? He's 8-for-30 (.267) with two doubles, two home runs and 10 strikeouts lifetime against Tillman. Edwin Encarnacion is 12-for-41 (.293) with two doubles and a home run, Josh Donaldson is 5-for-13 (.385) with two doubles, and Kevin Pillar is 3-for-7 (.429) with a double and home run.

Left-hander Mark Buehrle has beaten the Orioles in both starts this season, allowing two runs in six innings in a 12-5 victory on April 10 and three runs in six innings in a 13-6 victory on April 21.

Run support hasn't been an issue.

Buehrle is 10-10 with a 3.58 ERA in 26 games (24 starts) against the Orioles. It only seems like half of them have come in 2015. He's 4-5 with a 4.13 ERA in 12 games (11 starts) at Camden Yards.

The current Orioles are batting .341 against Buehrle. Adam Jones is 16-for-37 (.432) with four doubles and two home runs, Delmon Young is 22-for-56 (.393) with three doubles and four home runs, Chris Davis is 8-for-25 (.320) with two home runs, Caleb Joseph is 4-for-8 with a double and home run, and Travis Snider is 5-for-9 (.556).

J.J. Hardy is 4-for-30 (.133) with two doubles and a home run, and Pearce is 2-for-11 (.182) with two doubles.

If I told you before spring training that, between Ubaldo Jimenez and Bud Norris, one starter would have a 2.41 ERA in six starts and the other would have a 9.88 ERA in six starts, how would you have paired them up?

What about Jimmy Paredes being the regular designated hitter and Young having the most starts in right field? Pearce playing second base?

Makes you wonder what tomorrow will bring? Since it's the Orioles, there's always the possibility of an injury.

Jimenez is 6-0 with a 2.14 ERA in his last seven starts at Camden Yards dating back to June 25, 2014.

The Orioles are 23-3 when Joseph has an RBI.

Down on the farm, shortstop-turned-reliever Mychal Givens has posted a 0.96 ERA and recorded five saves in 10 appearances at Double-A Bowie covering 18 2/3 innings. He's walked seven and struck out 27.

As the arm slot lowers, so does the ERA, but not the velocity on his fastball. Givens was clocked at 98 mph again in his last outing.

Lots of positive reports on Dylan Bundy, as well. His fastball is back up to 96 mph and he's exuding confidence. People who have watched him say it's evident on the mound.
