Saunders not as sharp at the start (Hardy helps O's to 3-2 lead)

There won't be any talk of a perfect game for Joe Saunders tonight. Saunders retired the first 17 batters he faced in Monday's start in Toronto, but the Yankees took a 1-0 lead against him in the first inning. Derek Jeter continued his Saunders assault with a leadoff single, making him 9-for-20 lifetime against the veteran left-hander. Jeter moved to third on a one-out double by Mark Teixeira, who was activated from the disabled list earlier in the day, and scored on Alex Rodriguez's fly ball to left. Teixeira is now 5-for-23 against Saunders. Saunders threw 23 pitches in the inning. CC Sabathia disposed of the Orioles on 12 pitches in the bottom of the first. The game started on time despite the ominous forecast and a light rain that continues to fall. There are a lot more Yankees fans here tonight than the first two nights. Update: It's still raining and the Orioles are still hitting home runs. Mark Reynolds and Lew Ford went back-to-back in the second inning, the sixth time it's happened for the Orioles this season, and we're tied, 2-2. Reynolds has 21 homers this season, nine in his last nine games and seven against the Yankees. Ford was 7-for-36 lifetime against Sabathia before tonight. He has three homers and three RBIs this season. The Yankees took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning against Saunders, who's thrown 48 pitches. Russell Martin walked to lead off the second, and he scored with one out on Ichiro Suzuki's double over Adam Jones' head. Saunders escaped further harm by striking out Jayson Nix on an 89-mph fastball to end an eight-pitch at-bat and retiring Jeter on a grounder to short. Jeter might have done Saunders a favor by swinging at the first pitch. Update II: Reynolds' seven home runs against the Yankees ties him with Ramon Hernandez (2006) for the club's single-season record. That's also the most that any player has hit against the Yankees since Vernon Wells had seven for the Blue Jays in 2010. Carlos Pena hit eight in 2007. Hank Greenberg holds the record with 11 in 1938, back when Peter Schmuck was an intern at his newspaper. Happy Birthday, Schmucker. Update III: Saunders retired 10 in a row before Jeter reached on an infield hit with two outs in the fifth inning. Nick Swisher flied out to end the inning. J.J. Hardy doubled to score Nick Markakis in the third and give the Orioles a 3-2 lead. Hardy is 6-for-16 lifetime against Sabathia. Rain continues to fall, but not hard enough to interrupt play.
