Showalter ejected in seventh inning (O's lose 8-3)

On the 60th anniversary weekend at Camden Yards, Orioles manager Buck Showalter just broke out his Earl Weaver impression, minus the kicking of dirt on home plate. Showalter was ejected in the seventh inning for the first time this season, with second base umpire Jeff Nelson doing the honors. Bench coach John Russell will take over the managing duties. Nelson ruled that Jhonny Peralta was out at second base on a force play after Ryan Flaherty made a diving stop up the middle and flipped the ball to Jonathan Schoop. Schoop lost control of it as he tried to turn the double play. The transfer rule is supposed to be dead, but Cardinals manager Mike Matheny requested a review and the call was overturned. The review lasted 2 minutes, 33 seconds. Showalter lengthened the delay by sprinting out of the dugout and venting at each umpire. Showalter kept motioning for the headsets, as if he wanted to speak with the umpire in New York who overturned the call. The first gesture earned him the ejection. Actually, Showalter was toast as soon as he came out of the dugout. Managers can't argue calls once they're challenged or reviewed. T.J. McFarland escaped the jam and the Orioles continue to trail the Cardinals 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning at Camden Yards. A manager's ejection, three-run home runs. This is Earl's kind of weekend. Update: The Orioles won the series, but were denied a sweep with today's 8-3 loss to the Cardinals. Andrew Miller gave up his first hits and run as an Oriole in the eighth inning on back-to-back doubles by Matt Carpenter and Kolten Wong. Zach Britton entered in the ninth in a non-save situation and surrendered a three-run homer to Peter Bourjos. That's the first home run allowed by Britton since Josh Donaldson's walk-off in Oakland on July 18. The Orioles are 67-50 overall and 32-26 at home. They're 8-11 on Sunday, including 3-7 at Camden Yards, and 0-1 when Showalter is ejected. Caleb Joseph has thrown out 18 of 36 runners attempting to steal.
