Showalter on Wednesday starter and 10-7 loss

Orioles manager Buck Showalter announced that Ubaldo Jimenez will start Wednesday night against the Padres at Camden Yards. The decision was made following tonight's game.

Odrisamer Despaigne recorded the final out in the top of the ninth to officially eliminate him from consideration. Left-hander Brian Duensing remains a candidate to go on the disabled list with a sore elbow, and Showalter indicated that the Orioles could recall someone on Wednesday who hasn't been down the minimum 10 days.

Mike Wright would be a bullpen candidate in that scenario, but Jimenez is starting.

Tyler Wilson still hasn't won at Camden Yards, his latest chance tonight disintegrating in the top of the seventh inning.

Wilson passed a three-run lead to the bullpen, but Mychal Givens was charged with four while failing to retire a batter and the Orioles lost to the Padres 10-7 before 23,876 at Camden Yards.

Givens faced five batters. Double, single, single, walk and walk. One run scored on Mark Trumbo's fielding error in right. The last walk to Derek Norris with the count full forced in a run.

Two inherited runners scored off Oliver Drake, making his 2016 debut. He was charged with a wild pitch that let the tying run score, though catcher Francisco Pena needed to block it. The ball scooted under his mitt. Jonathan Schoop wanted to throw home after fielding Christian Bethancourt's grounder, but he bobbled it and settled for the out at first as the go-ahead run scored.

Showalter wanted to stay away from Brad Brach, who pitched in back-to-back games over the weekend and worked two innings on Sunday. Brach didn't make the trip to Texas yesterday, but he still needed a break.

Dylan Bundy threw three innings last night. Duensing wasn't available due to the sore left elbow. Too soon to bring in Zach Britton. Darren O'Day remains on the disabled list.

Drake had to get warm again. Jimenez probably shouldn't come into a tight game in relief.

It fell upon Givens, and he was scored upon for the third time in four outings. He's allowed eight runs in 3 1/3 innings.

The Padres scored three runs off Britton in the ninth, only one earned due to Ryan Flaherty's error. Britton had allowed three runs in his first 28 appearances.

Britton came out after 23 pitches, keeping him available Wednesday night.

The Orioles loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth, but Fernando Rodney replaced left-hander Ryan Buchter and retired Adam Jones on a bouncer to second base.

Rodney picked up his 15th save, but he walked Hyun Soo Kim and allowed a one-out double to Chris Davis in the ninth. Schoop struck out looking, but Pedro Alvarez delivered an RBI single up the first base line.

Rodney has permitted only one earned run in 26 2/3 innings.

Wilson surrendered three runs and nine hits in six innings, with one walk, four strikeouts, a home run and two hit batters. He threw 93 pitches, 58 for strikes.

Wilson threw 24 pitches in the first inning, allowing three hits and hitting a batter, but surrendering only one run. He threw four in the second and seven in the sixth. He could be economical at times.

In his last two starts, Wilson has allowed three runs and 12 hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts in 14 innings.

Meanwhile, Alvarez made it especially tough to pitch to him tonight.

Alvarez hit a two-run homer to left field in the fourth inning and a two-run homer to right field in the fifth. He put enough air under the second one to get Dorothy back to Kansas.

Alvarez had the 11th multi-homer game of his career and continued a torrid month of June. He's 16-for-47 (.340) with a double, six home runs and 13 RBIs.

The Orioles are 40-30 this season and 26-13 at home. They retain sole possession of first place in the American League East.

Here's a sampling of Showalter:

On Wilson: "OK. He was coming off his longest outing of the year and kept battling. Typical Tyler. Gave up a lot of hits, but found a way to keep us in the game. Got a lead we couldn't hold, obviously. Got some people who have been real good for us holding that lead, but it just didn't happen tonight."

On Givens' command issues: "He tried to pick it up a little bit after the fact, but just never could really seem to find it. Kind of reminds he's going to have some nights like that with his experience level where he just can't seem to find it. He never really got a hold of it. We were short down there tonight and hoping we could get that seventh inning pitched by him. There's a lot more to it. Zach's been so good and trying to make sure we can fight another day with tomorrow's situation, so kind of where we are. Get in at 4, 4:30 in the morning and you try to grind through it."

On Jimenez: "Ubaldo's going to start tomorrow. It's four days off. He's rested and ready to go. I was hoping to stay away from Despaigne, but didn't want to leave Zach out there and get in a position where he couldn't pitch tomorrow. He had a couple days off and only pitched two out of seven, so we were hoping to keep it at one run and try to have everybody tomorrow, but it didn't work out."

More on Jimenez: "We didn't know until after the game. We were waiting to see if Duensing is DL-able and then we can bring back someone before the 10 days. And we feel like that is where he will eventually end up, but we aren't sure. That's not to say we won't bring somebody tomorrow that's within the 10-day window. We aren't done yet. Believe me, we're going to have to do something tonight. It seems like we have been doing that a lot lately."

On Britton's recent struggles: "Zach's one of the best in the business. You are going to have those times, he had them last year. He's good. He gets a lot of rope. He's as good as there is. One of the good things about him, it doesn't affect him, the situations that he's pitching in. He's so competitive and so on.

"Actually, I thought it'd be kind of good for him to get out there and get back on the horse a little bit. I hope we get an opportunity to use him tomorrow, but that's the least of my concern. But they're going to have those moments, everybody is. It's hard for anybody to be as close to perfect as he's been for seven or eight months. Like I said, seven days a week. Nobody is in any job."

On the difficulty of the last two nights due to the schedule: "You know what? People really don't want to hear it. They really don't. It'd be very easy to complain about it, but we do this for seven, eight months for seven days a week and we are all lucky to do it, and no one really wants to hear about it. Having a late night and not sleeping very much, people do it every day of their lives who work 9 to 5. There will be nights when we will we get in some place before someone else - I don't think we've had one of those this year - but the schedule obviously hasn't been kind to us, but it's part of it."

On Givens: "Command. Early on he's being a little reactive instead of proactive with his outings some. It's one of those things that young pitchers learn from. Try to keep in mind he hasn't been pitching more than two or three years. It's a learning experience for him. We've got a lot of guys learning the job without much major league experience, with Tyler being one of them. And Mychal and Oliver and I can keep rattling them off, but no one wants to hear about it."

On no Brach tonight: "I wasn't going to pitch him today. He's had three ups and one day off. I'm not pitching him today."

On the challenge of not using Brach more while O'Day is on the DL: "It's tougher if they're not available for three months. You just don't have a guy have three ups and one day off. I think he's leading our club in appearances. It's like getting drunk with success and forgetting about why they're successful."

On Alvarez: "He's in a pretty good place right now. He's got a good approach and a good routine. He and Scott (Coolbaugh) have kind of struck a good chord about what kind of works. We're getting a return and it's good to see it because through thick and thin he never gave in, never complained. He's a pro. He works hard at it. I'm glad as much for him as I am for our team. We could be sitting here talking a lot about him if we'd have gotten the seventh inning pitched."
