The ball found Blake Davis (again)

You knew it would happen. Blake Davis is making his first major league appearance at third base today. The first ball put in play was a sharp bouncer to Davis. The baseball gods have a wicked sense of humor. The ball took a big hop and caromed off Davis' chest for an error, allowing Maicer Izturis to reach first base. He was erased at second on a force, but Howie Kendrick singled into right field to put runners on the corners against Orioles left-hander Brian Matusz. Matusz struck out the next two batters to escape the jam and take some heat off Davis. Davis appeared in three games at third base with Triple-A Norfolk this season. He's mostly been an outfielder in the minors this year after projecting as a middle infielder when he began playing professional baseball. Davis has played third base in 26 games over parts of six minor league seasons, so he's familiar with the position. He's just not as comfortable at the hot corner. Josh Bell could be heading back to Norfolk before this road trip ends - perhaps before the Orioles board their charter for Minnesota. He didn't get the start at third, and he wasn't chosen to replace Mark Reynolds at first. He's not hitting and his defense has been wildly inconsistent, including the wild throw that caused the collision between Reynolds and Hank Conger. Reynolds is expected back in the lineup tomorrow night after twisting his ankle last night. Update: Davis also committed an error on the second ball hit to him, again failing to glove a bouncer - this one along the line. Vernon Wells reached base, but ran into a double play on Erick Aybar's fly ball to right. Matusz looked like he was out of trouble, but consecutive doubles by Mike Trout and Bobby Wilson broke a scoreless tie. Izturis reached on an infield hit and Peter Bourjos singled on an 0-2 pitch to increase the Angels' lead to 2-0 in the second inning. Felix Pie, starting in left field, never saw Wilson's fly ball. He sprinted toward the fence with his back to the infield, and the ball bounced to his right. Also, manager Buck Showalter indicated earlier today that the Orioles could make another roster move to strengthen their bench, and Ryan Adams appears to be the choice, according to various reports and the fact that he's not starting tonight for the Tides. Adams is hitting .283 with 28 doubles, three triples, 10 homers and 37 RBIs in 93 games with Norfolk. He went 5-for-23 with an RBI in nine games with the Orioles earlier this season. Adams is 7-for-35 with an RBI in his last 10 games with Norfolk. He isn't beating down the door, but he could play second base with the Orioles and allow Robert Andino to make some starts at third while Reynolds plays first.
