Tuesdays with worry (plus notes)

We made it through an entire day and night without a roster move, though I set my alarm for 11:59 p.m. in case the Orioles were trying to sneak a press release past me. It should be fairly quiet today. No game, no players sent packing, no medical examinations, no injury rehab starts. If I'm keeping track properly, infielder Cesar Izturis will undergo his elbow surgery tomorrow in Baltimore. Second baseman Brian Roberts will be examined by a concussion specialist tomorrow in Pittsburgh. Left-hander Brian Matusz will throw a bullpen session tomorrow at Camden Yards. Tomorrow should be far more interesting than today. The Izturis surgery isn't that intriguing. Team orthopedist Dr. John Wilckens will move the ulnar nerve in Izturis' right elbow. And not to the other arm or another player. That would be intriguing. Izturis is on the 60-day disabled list. Manager Buck Showalter thinks Izturis will recover in time to play for the Orioles later this season. He barely got off the bench the first two months. Roberts is supposed to be batting leadoff and playing second base, but we don't know when he'll return to the lineup and the field. He's eligible to come off the new seven-day disabled list tomorrow, but he's not close to returning. And while Roberts says his concussion symptoms aren't as intense as the ones he experienced during the final week of the 2010 season, his condition warrants concern. Any sort of head injury or trauma must be taken seriously, and it's happened to him twice in less than a year. I've stated countless times that Roberts is the player that the Orioles could least afford to lose. Well, they've lost him again. They don't have any other real leadoff options on the roster, and Robert Andino - Roberts' primary replacement - is better at shortstop than second base. Ryan Adams made one start, collected his first major league hit and stayed on the bench the next two games. I'll say again that the Orioles have an opportunity to evaluate a former second-round pick and should be taking full advantage of it. Try to find a silver lining in the latest black cloud over Roberts. Adams might be Roberts' successor at second base. He might not. This would be a good time to begin making that judgment, however long Roberts is out. And the experience can only benefit Adams. Matusz will throw his bullpen session and wait to find out which affiliate gets to sell more tickets. He's not likely to make his next start with the Orioles. He can build his pitch count closer to 100, get more "ups" and perhaps be slotted into the rotation toward the end of the West Coast trip that concludes June 1. NOTES: Single-A Frederick's Bobby Bundy was named the Carolina League's Player of the Week after holding Kinston to one run and three hits, and striking out eight, over eight innings in Saturday's start. Single-A Delmarva's Mike Flacco, brother of Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, was named the South Atlantic League's Player of the Week after batting .538 with seven doubles and five RBIs.
