Uehara will pitch Tuesday, Pelzer reassigned (with quotes)

SARASOTA, Fla. - Koji Uehara will pitch Tuesday in a minor league game after having another successful bullpen session earlier today. Uehara has made one appearance this spring, allowing one run and two hits in one inning against the Pirates in the Feb. 28 exhibition opener in Bradenton. The Orioles reassigned pitcher Wynn Pelzer following today's game, reducing their camp roster to 40. The Phillies scored twice off left-hander Michael Gonzalez in the seventh, including Erik Kratz's tie-breaking homer, in a 7-5 victory over the Orioles. Here's what Jake Arrieta said about his outing: "I started off really well. The thing I was really unhappy with was the (John) Mayberry at-bat. I did a really poor job of execution there. Pulled a lot of pitches out of the zone, didn't throw a breaking ball for a strike and ended up having to throw him a fastball that caught too much of the plate. He put a good swing on it. Other than that, the two walks in the fifth, you just can't walk the eight and nine hitters. You can't do it, but that's something I am not too worried about. I know that my command has gotten a lot better and I have been really able to avoid situations like that for the most part. "Talked to Buck (Showalter) and I've got to be quicker to home plate. I've got to work on that this week. Try to have those guys from getting too good of a jump at first. But overall, it was good. A lot of positives. I'm glad I got to 80 pitches. Would have liked to have gotten through the fifth, but overall it was all right." Showalter wanted to give Derrek Lee two at-bats and keep him in the field for four innings. Mission accomplished. "He felt good and he'll make the trip tomorrow as long as he doesn't come in with some soreness," Showalter said. "It will be good to see him and Robby (Brian Roberts) on the field together tomorrow. We'll break out the gray pants for them." Focusing on Lee's debut again, Showalter added, "The one thing about veteran players like him, no matter how long you've been playing, you've got some amp working there, but they've all been able to take the emotion out of their at-bats. One of the things with guys like (Andino) and (Felix) Pie and some of our younger players, you've got to take your emotion out of your at-bats. You're in front of 30,000, 40,000 people with the bases loaded, you can't let your emotion put you in swing mode, and I think Derrek's a good example of that." Showalter thought Arrieta was in pretty good shape "stuff-wise," but the right-hander needs to increase his tempo from the stretch. "It's something he got a lot better at last year, but they come in here and they're working so much on just pitching," Showalter said. Hall of Fame manager Earl Weaver talked to the coaching staff for about 30 minutes today, and one topic was the old Oriole Way. "I think he enjoyed it as much as we did," Showalter said.
