Updating Galvis and impact of short bench

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde hopes that shortstop Freddy Galvis will be available to start or come off the bench Friday night when the Orioles begin their two-city West Coast trip in Oakland.

Galvis is day-to-day with a sore left adductor/groin, an injury sustained Monday night while running out an RBI double.

Hyde said Galvis hit on the field yesterday and did some infield work this morning. Increasing baseball activities also meant jogging up the first base line.

"I want to see how that goes. I'll get the medical report after he takes ground balls," Hyde said.

"I'd like to stay away from him today, honestly. I don't think a day game is really the ideal spot to put him in. Hopefully tomorrow."

Galvis is batting .264/.321/.458 with six doubles, a triple and two home runs in 22 games. He's hitting .348/.400/.630 (16-for-46) in his last 15 games.

Ramón Urías is starting at shortstop today after Pat Valaika handled the position last night. Urías is hitless in his last 15 at-bats.

A short bench is thinner with Galvis injured, and it severely limits Hyde's ability to shake up the order. Backup catcher Chance Sisco and infielder Rio Ruiz, slashing .167/.219/.200 and .145/.221/.274, respectively, are the reserves this afternoon.

The price that's paid for carrying nine relievers.

"In this kind of tough stretch we're in where we don't have many days off in a row, we're facing really good teams, as you've seen the last two nights, our starter hasn't given us much length, so we need that extra bullpen arm," Hyde said. "Unfortunately, it costs us from a roster standpoint losing a position player. We don't have a whole lot of flexibility from a lineup standpoint. Now with Freddy being day-to-day, even less.

"We're going with what we have right now and hopefully these guys today put some good at-bats together and play a good baseball game."

Trey Mancini is trying to rise beyond his slump. He's reached base safely in each of the last six games, going 7-for-22 with two doubles, three RBIs, three walks and two runs scored.

"We talked before the game and he's doing better," Hyde said. "I think he's starting to realize that it's not going to come as easy as he thought, and I just keep reminding him that. Just stay with the process and just continue to try to take good at-bats every day and eventually you're going to feel like you did in September 2019. Just right now, you've got to work some things out. You haven't played. It's not an easy game.

"So those conversations are continuing to happen. I felt like he was in a good place yesterday before the game and it was nice to see him get a couple hits last night."
