Updating Yovani Gallardo (and other notes)

SARASOTA, Fla. - Yovani Gallardo is headed to the Ed Smith Stadium complex today, with his physical likely to begin around noon.

Gallardo could be on the field for workouts as early as Tuesday, when the Orioles will be forced to make a corresponding roster move. It depends whether the physical is completed in one day.

The Orioles can't make a roster move with Rule 5 pick Joey Rickard before March 14, in case anyone was speculating that he could be removed to make room for Gallardo or another player.

Manager Buck Showalter said he's impressed with Rickard's movement in the outfield. The guy is fast and he covers a lot of ground.

paredes-swing-sidebar-white.jpgJimmy Paredes reported to camp today and took ground balls at third base on the artificial surface field. He also expects to play the outfield, as he did over the winter.

Paredes met with the media a few minutes ago and I'll pass along his quotes in the next entry. In the meantime, he was subjected to a selfie because he entered our workroom.

The Orioles will play intrasquad games on Feb. 27 and 28 on the main field. The first game will begin at 11 a.m. and last five innings. The second game will begin at 1:05 p.m. and last seven innings.

The games aren't open to the public.

Pitchers who completed their bullpen sessions today included Ubaldo Jimenez, Brian Matusz, Darren O'Day, Vance Worley, Chris Tillman, Miguel Gonzalez, Brad Brach, Kevin Gausman, Todd Redmond, Dylan Bundy, Jason Garcia, Cesar Cabral, Hunter Harvey, Ashur Tolliver and Andrew Triggs.
