I watched most of today's game at Little Havana - best pork bites in town - and I didn't need the sound cranked up to know that the Orioles wasted some golden opportunities against two-time Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum.
Lincecum's velocity is down. We're talking low-90s, which isn't the norm. He put runners on base, the Orioles would move them into scoring position, and then they'd apply the brakes.
The Orioles went 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position and stranded 13 runners. They couldn't get a clutch hit, struggled to catch fly balls and wasted a pretty good outing from Jeremy Guthrie, who surrendered back-to-back homers to Aubrey Huff and Juan Uribe in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie.
I also didn't need sound on the TV to notice how Huff flipped the bat and watched the ball take a bath beyond the right field stands. He thoroughly enjoyed it.
Julio Lugo, a late substitution for Scott Moore, went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Lugo, Craig Tatum and Cesar Izturis went a combined 6-for-11 with three RBIs.
Moore pinch-hit late in the game, so I don't think we need to worry about the disabled list.
MASN's Amber Theoharis told me earlier today that interim manager Juan Samuel expressed concern over his inability to find at-bats for Garrett Atkins, especially in National League ballparks, and how he'd need to discuss Atkins' future with president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail once the Orioles return home.
Doesn't sound like Atkins will be leading that late-season push for the wild card.
Brandon Waring had two homers and five RBIs tonight in Double-A Bowie's 11-9 win over Reading.
I mentioned earlier that Single-A Frederick reliever Jose Duran was added to the Carolina League All-Star team. He celebrated by allowing seven runs (five earned) and six hits in 2 2/3 innings tonight against Winston-Salem. He walked two and struck out two.
He's still deserving of the honor.
Single-A Delmarva's Steven Bumbry went 2-for-4 with two triples and an RBI.
