VandenHurk not nugget-like tonight (Showalter ejected)

Rick VandenHurk's second start with the Orioles this month didn't do much to enhance his standing within the organization. VandenHurk couldn't record an out in the fourth inning and he couldn't hold a 4-1 lead. Jo-Jo Reyes replaced him with runners on first and second, no outs and the Orioles ahead, 4-3. Jacoby Ellsbury singled to load the bases. Reyes struck out Dustin Pedroia and Adrian Gonzalez appeared to bounce into a 3-6-3 double play, but first baseman Mark Reynolds missed catcher Matt Wieters' throw for an error that allowed the go-ahead run to score. Reynolds reached up for the ball and it deflected off his mitt. Red Sox 5, Orioles 4. David Ortiz struck out looking to end the inning. Reyes did an outstanding job, except for Ellsbury's single. This game should be tied. VandenHurk is charged with five runs (four earned), the last one scoring while he sat on the bench. He allowed seven hits, walked three and struck out four. He threw 77 pitches, only 40 for strikes. Manager Buck Showalter is looking for nuggets. VandenHurk's two starts after having his contract purchased don't present much of an argument in his favor. The Orioles will have to decide whether he deserves that spot on the 40-man roster or whether they can get him through waivers again and perhaps invite him to spring training. Update: Showalter was ejected by third base umpire Chris Guccione in the fifth inning after leaving the dugout to argue a third strike on Matt Wieters that resulted in a double play, with catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia throwing out Vladimir Guerrero at second base. Showalter thought Wieters checked his swing. That's the third ejection for Showalter this season.
