SARASOTA, Fla. - Seth Smith's first Grapefruit League hit also produced his first home run, a shot to deep center field leading off the bottom of the sixth inning that increased the Orioles' lead to 6-0 over the Blue Jays.
Smith was hitless in 10 at-bats, but he drew four walks, including one today in the second inning. He doubled yesterday against the Dominican Republic in a fake exhibition game.
Darren O'Day struck out two batters while retiring the side in order in the fourth. He's allowed one hit and struck out six in three scoreless innings this spring.
Tyler Wilson made the Jays fly out for the cycle in the fifth - left, center and right - while retiring the side in order. He allowed a pair of one-out singles in the sixth after catching Dwight Smith Jr.'s screaming liner up the middle, and Anthony Alford's infield hit with two outs ended the shutout bid. However, Trey Mancini threw home to cut down Ryan Goins, with Caleb Joseph applying the tag.
Wade Miley worked fast again today, receiving the ball from Joseph and immediately checking for the sign so he could let it go again. He doesn't take strolls around the back of the mound. He's all business.
Miley tossed three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out three. He threw 42 pitches, 28 for strikes.
It was a triumphant return after leaving his last start against the Pirates due to the line drive that glanced off his left forearm and slammed into his ribcage. He had surrendered three earned runs (four total) and five hits before departing in the second inning, the kind of start that leaves a few bruises on your body and a bad taste in your mouth.
"A lot better," he said. "I felt my command was a lot better with the fastball. I felt like I threw the ball the same way last time as far as the fastball location. Just didn't get a few calls here and there, and obviously put the ball in play a little more. But I was happy with it."
The slider usually is the last pitch to come around for Miley in spring training, but he was satisfied with it today.
"It was pretty good today," he said. "I still cut a few of them off, but I was able to throw it for a strike when I wanted to and that's pretty important."
Time to ask the clichéd question: Is Miley where he wants to be at this point in camp?
"Yeah, absolutely," he said. "I think normally I would have went four innings today, but I think the last one was so short, they kind of backed it off. We still have plenty of time. But I feel like I'm in a good position."
Miley enjoys fishing in the pond behind the outdoor batting cage, though an otter has become an unwelcomed guest. It's a routine he will carry back to Baltimore.
"Actually, my house has a pond," he said, "so we've got that covered already."
Update: Tyler Wilson allowed four runs in 2 2/3 innings, the last three coming on a long home run to left field by Lourdes Gurriel in the seventh. Orioles 6, Blue Jays 4
