Washington sidelined with shoulder injury (and more notes)

LAKELAND, Fla. - Today's game isn't scheduled to begin until 1:30 p.m. due to opening ceremonies at the newly refurbished Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium.

First baseman/outfielder David Washington is listed on the travel roster, but he's day-to-day after jamming his right shoulder while diving back into first base on an attempted pickoff. He had a single and double in Tuesday's intrasquad game.

Washington was a late addition to the lineup after the Orioles designated Christian Walker for assignment to create a 40-man spot for left-hander Richard Bleier.

"I think he'll be OK shortly," said manager Buck Showalter. "We'll see how it is in the next day or two."

Reliever Logan Ondrusek still hasn't been cleared to pitch after rolling his ankle in a fielding drill, but he's improving each day.

"I talked to him a little bit today," Showalter said. "He's moving. I expect to see him before long."

kim-running-white.jpgOutfielder Hyun Soo Kim is in today's lineup, but he probably won't travel to Bradenton for Saturday's game against the Pirates.

The Orioles want to give Kim more plate appearances against left-handers this spring and the Pirates are starting Steve Brault, "but he may only throw one or two innings. You're talking one at-bat," Showalter said.

"It's a little too early in spring to do that. But it will change as we get into it."

I wrote earlier today that Anthony Santander continues to bat from the left side following surgery on his right shoulder. The Orioles initially thought he might be restricted to the right side.

"He's fine. Went through that in detail with him and he's fine," Showalter said.

"He's a good-looking hitter, good-looking body. He's a good-looking athlete, strong. As advertised. He's a good looking player, good looking hitter. I'm really anxious, looking forward to seeing him in the outfield.

"Watching him throw, it looks like his arm is going to work OK, too."
