What's next for Garcia? (O's lose 13-5)

Do the Orioles keep Freddy Garcia in the rotation after today's start, or do they consider the alternatives at Triple-A Norfolk? Garcia turned in his shortest start today, lasting only 2 1/3 innings, and was charged with a season-high seven runs. He allowed seven hits, walked two, struck out one, gave up a home run and hit a batter. Manager Buck Showalter removed Garcia after 61 pitches. Over his last two starts, Garcia has allowed 12 runs and 15 hits in 7 2/3 innings. He hasn't strung together two quality starts in a row. His ERA is up to 5.77 in 53 innings. Garcia surrendered six runs and seven hits over three innings in a June 5 start in Houston. He was much better against the Angels in his following start, as always, before reverting to bad form. This outing was atrocious. There's no way to put a positive spin on it - other than nobody from the Blue Jays taunted him while rounding the bases. How much longer is his leash? Showalter and executive vice president Dan Duquette will discuss it. T.J. McFarland was charged with two runs in the third, as the Blue Jays built a 9-0 lead. He also let his 11th inherited runner score out of 17. He's clearly much better when he starts an inning. Maybe he should be starting for the Orioles. Wei-Yin Chen won't be ready. He's scheduled to throw four innings in Monday's simulated game in Sarasota and begins an injury-rehab assignment on Saturday. Garcia's next turn is Friday night against the Yankees at Camden Yards. Does he get the ball? Down on the farm, Tsuyoshi Wada has allowed two runs and five hits in five innings with Triple-A Norfolk, with two walks, no strikeouts and one hit batter. He's thrown 91 pitches, 51 for strikes. Buck Britton extended his hitting streak to 20 games, tied for fourth-longest in Tides history. Update: The Orioles scored twice in the sixth to break up Josh Johnson's shutout bid, and Ryan Flaherty hit a two-run homer in the seventh to reduce the Blue Jays' lead to 9-4. Manny Machado and Nick Markakis doubled in the sixth, and another run scored on an error. Machado leads the majors with 34 doubles. Flaherty has homered twice in this series. Today's blast followed Chris Dickerson's second hit of the day. Dickerson is now 6-for-10 lifetime vs. Johnson, who came out of the game after Flaherty's homer. McFarland has retired 10 in a row. Update II: McFarland is charged with five runs in a career-high 4 1/3 innings, the last two scoring after he left the game. Pedro Strop hit Rajai Davis to load the bases, and Jose Bautista cleared them with a double. Toronto 13, Orioles 4 That's a season-high 13 runs allowed by the Orioles this season. On the plus side, McFarland saved the bullpen today by consuming 4 1/3 innings. Strop has let 10 of 17 inherited runners score. His ERA is up to 7.17. Machado didn't help matters by holding onto the ball after fielding J.P. Arencibia's bouncer up the line. You've got to assume it's fair until the umpire rules otherwise. Update III: The Blue Jays completed the sweep and extended their winning streak to 11 games with a 13-5 victory over the Orioles. Flaherty hit his second home run of the day to complete the scoring. Enough of this road trip.
