A couple of notes from Delmarva

The Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds play their 15th game of the new season tonight at Augusta trying to snap a four-game losing streak that has dropped their record to 5-9. The Birds have given up 41 runs over those four games. The Shorebirds lost a wild one, 11-10 at Augusta in 10 innings last night in a game that featured 21 runs, 28 hits and nine errors. During this losing streak, the Delmarva bullpen has allowed 17 earned runs and 27 hits over 14 innings. Tonight, Scott Copeland (1-0, 4.50) gets the start. He has allowed six earned runs over 12 innings in his first two starts. Jacob Pettit is the first Shorebirds' pitcher since 2004 to win his first two starts. His ERA of 0.71 is fourth in the Sally League. David Walters has four saves to lead the league. Kipp Schutz had two more hits last night and has hit safely in 11 of his 12 games. Trent Mummey has a six-game batting streak and during the six games has six walks, seven runs, five RBIs and eight stolen bases. His 12 stolen bases tops the league. The Birds, as a team, are batting .377 against left-handed pitching and .249 versus right-handers. Mychal Givens is struggling at bat. He went 0-for-5 last night and has just one hit over his last 16 at-bats and is 2-for-30. He is hitting just .091 against right-handed pitchers. Manny Machado's bat has cooled after his sizzling start. He is 1-for-10 in the Augusta series and batting .256 over his last 10 games. On the year, he is batting .280 in 13 games without a homer and with eight RBIs and an .803 OPS. He is doing just fine for someone that is 18 and in his first full year of minor league ball.
