A few firsts (updated)

Jake Arrieta threw 11 of his 15 pitches for strikes in the first inning. Unfortunately, one of them landed on the flag court. Former Oriole Corey Patterson homered in his first career at-bat against Arrieta, giving Toronto a quick 1-0 lead. Arrieta is coming off the shortest outing of his career, when he lasted only 2 1/3 innings in a 4-3 loss in Seattle. He allowed four runs and four hits, with four walks and three strikeouts, and threw 68 pitches before leaving the game. Eight of the 17 batters he faced reached base. Adding a bruise to insult, Arrieta took a shot off his left ankle, courtesy of Ichiro Suzuki. In his previous start, Arrieta held Kansas City to two runs and struck out seven over six innings. In the start before that one, he allowed six runs and six hits in 3 2/3 innings in a 17-5 loss to Washington. I guess he's due for a good outing tonight. Adam Jones is batting third for the first time this season, and the 50th game of his major league career. He was 31-for-149 (.208) before lining a single into left field in the first inning. Jones is 9-for-24 lifetime against Blue Jays left-hander Ricky Romero. Update: The Jays scored again in the second inning on a Juan Rivera infield hit, Arrieta throwing error, walk and one-out sacrifice fly by Rajai Davis, but the Orioles came back with a run in the bottom half. In keeping with my "first" theme, Derrek Lee led off the bottom of the second with a single in his first at-bat since coming off the disabled list. And he scored his first run on J.J. Hardy's grounder that followed Matt Wieters' ground-rule double to left field.
