A few things about Wolf (with lineup and call-up updates)

NEW YORK - Randy Wolf will officially become a member of the Orioles this afternoon at Yankee Stadium. His debut could come this weekend as the second left-hander in the bullpen. Wolf has made only five relief appearances in his 371 major league games - allowing six runs and 10 hits, and striking out 11 in nine innings - but he figures to stay in the bullpen unless there's an injury or two in the rotation. Manager Buck Showalter keeps saying that both roles are options for Wolf, which is true, but the veteran was signed to pitch in relief. I guess you could say Wolf is a starter in reliever's clothing. You could say that, but I don't recommend it. Wolf has made three starts against the Yankees in his career, going 0-2 with a 6.35 ERA. He allowed 16 hits, walked seven and struck out 10 in 17 innings. If Showalter is looking to match up Wolf against certain lefties in the Yankees' lineup, he already knows that Raul Ibanez is 5-for-17 with three doubles and a home run, Ichiro Suzuki is 5-for-9, Robinson Cano is 2-for-4 with two doubles, Eric Chavez is 1-for-3 with a home run and Nick Swisher is 1-for-3. Former Oriole Steve Pearce, a right-handed hitter, is 5-for-17 with two doubles and two homers against Wolf. Current Yankees manager Joe Girardi was 3-for-9. Yes, Wolf's been doing this for a while. Left-handers are batting .235 lifetime against Wolf, compared to .264 by right-handers. Wolf posted one win in his last 20 starts with the Brewers before they released him. In his last two outings, he allowed 11 runs and 20 hits in 12 innings. Overall, he was 3-10 with a 5.69 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in 142 1/3 innings. Wolf has posted his lowest career ERA in September (3.57), not counting his five October appearances (3.03). Opponents are batting .236 against him in September, the lowest average for any month.
