Orioles and Red Sox lineups, injury/illness updates

SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles have a big pitching day lined up for this afternoon’s game against the Red Sox at Ed Smith Stadium.

Charlie Morton makes his second start, but that’s just the opening act.

Tomoyuki Sugano will follow in relief, his second spring training appearance after Wednesday’s start against the Pirates in Bradenton. And Félix Bautista will make his exhibition debut later in the game, his first action in a competitive game since Aug. 25, 2023, prior to his Tommy John surgery.

Other relievers today include Roansy Contreras and Matt Bowman.

Bautista won’t be used on back-to-back days or more than one inning early in the regular season, according to manager Brandon Hyde.

Hyde told the media a few days ago that the Orioles want to stretch out Contreras as a starter after his 2 1/3 scoreless and hitless innings. Bowman, a Chevy Chase native, allowed two runs and two hits in his one inning in Bradenton.

Tyler O’Neill returns to the lineup today after missing Saturday’s game with an illness. Ryan O’Hearn is in right field, batting cleanup and looking for his first hit after nine at-bats.

Adley Rutschman behind the plate. Gary Sánchez is away from camp due to an illness that seems to be making the rounds.

Heston Kjerstad is the designated hitter and batting sixth.

Vimael Machín is starting at second base, and Gunnar Henderson’s absence with right side soreness gives Luis Vázquez another start at shortstop.

Hyde told the media this morning that Jordan Westburg is doing full baseball activities and could play Wednesday or Thursday. He also said Henderson is feeling much better.
