A look at Aberdeen's roster and other minor league notes

The short season Single-A Aberdeen IronBirds have begun another season in the New York-Penn League. They played their season opener on Friday at Hudson Valley.

This year's team is managed by Luis Pujols, who is in his second season with Aberdeen. Justin Lord is the pitching coach for a third season and Scott Beerer is the hitting coach.

Aberdeen lost Friday 4-2 at Hudson Valley and then won there 3-2 on Saturday. Yesterday, Aberdeen lost 8-6 at Staten Island. The IronBirds play their home opener Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. against Auburn at Ripken Stadium.

Here is a look at the IronBirds' roster:

Pitchers: Daniel Ayers, Xavier Borde, Mike Burke, Garrett Cortright, Dariel Delgado, Andrew Elliott, Steve Klimek, Yi-Hsiang Lin, Travis Seabrooke, Will Shepley, Robert Strader, Alex Wells, Jeong-Hyeon Yoon.

Catchers: Daniel Fajardo, Stuart Levy, Jerry McClanahan, Chris Shaw

Infielders: Frank Crinella, Carlos Diaz, Alejandro Juvier, Ronarsy Ledesma, Kirvin Moesquit, Guillermo Salas

Outfielders: Jaylen Ferguson, Daniel Franco, Randolph Gassaway, Jason Heinrich, Ryan McKenna, Mike Odenwaelder

Some Aberdeen roster notes:

* There are 14 players on the roster from the Orioles' 2015 draft including McKenna (round 4), Heinrich (round 5) and Ferguson (round 9).

* The roster has four players under the age of 20. Wells, Diaz, Ferguson and McKenna are all 19 years old.

* The roster has 14 players returning from various stints with Aberdeen last season. McClanahan, Odenwaelder, Ayers, Seabrooke, Lin and Gassaway were on the team for the entire 2015 season.

* The roster has a big international flavor with players born in several different countries. That list includes Seabrooke and Shaw from Canada, Fajardo and Salas from Venezuela, Delgado from Cuba, Wells from Australia, Yoon from South Korea, Diaz from Mexico, Moesquit from Curacao, Lin from Taiwan and Ledesma from the Dominican Republic.

In Aberdeen's first three games, Gassaway has gone 6-for-11 with two doubles and four RBIs. Salas is 4-for-10 with an RBI. In his first start, Wells gave up two runs over five innings and Seabrooke allowed two runs (one earned) over 5 2/3 innings.

Other notes from around the Orioles farm:

Triple-A Norfolk: With Sunday's 10-6 victory over Durham, the Tides have won five of six games, pitching to an ERA of 1.87. Winning pitcher Joe Gunkel is 4-2 with a 1.92 ERA over his last six starts while holding opponents to a .187 average.

Dariel Alvarez had three hits and an RBI in the win, upping his hitting streak to seven games. The three hits gave him 270 in his Norfolk career, surpassing the 269 posted by Brandon Snyder for the most by a Tides player since Norfolk became an Orioles affiliate in 2007.

Norfolk's Oliver Drake today was named the latest International League Pitcher of the Week. He went 4-for-4 in save chances during the week. He has not allowed an earned run over his last 14 games with 25 strikeouts in 14 innings.

The Tides activated lefty T.J. McFarland this afternoon after he was optioned by the Orioles and he will start tonight. Right-hander David Hale was placed on the DL with right calf injury.

Double-A Bowie: The Baysox beat Erie 9-4 Sunday and have won nine of their last 14 games. Bowie scored seven runs the last three innings. Tucker Nathans and Austin Wynns each had four hits and the Baysox got home runs from Drew Dosch and Julio Borbon.

Right-hander Bobby Bundy worked a season-high 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the win. Genison Reyes and Donnie Hart each worked a scoreless inning to end the game.

After a slow start, Baysox right-hander Jason Garcia is 2-0 with a 2.12 ERA his last three starts. Two of those three games were scoreless starts for Garcia.

Single-A Frederick: Frederick ended the first-half with a winning record after beating Lynchburg 12-6. The Orioles' Caleb Joseph continued his rehab assignment Sunday, going 2-for-4 with a solo homer. Joseph is 4-for-10 in three games with the Keys.

Frederick now begins the All-Star break with a 36-34 record and this marks the first time the club has finished a half above .500 since 2012, when the Keys went 35-34 in the second half. Frederick begins the second half on Thursday at Salem.

Single-A Delmarva: The Shorebirds posted a come-from-behind win over Hickory 8-7 on Sunday when Yermin Mercedes hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning. Delmarva's charge toward a first half divison title fell 1/2-game short. Hagerstown won the first half division title.

Delmarva played one less game than Hagerstown because of a rain out against the Greenville Drive back in May that was not made up. Sometimes in the minors game are not made up. But the Shorebirds went 42-27 in the first half. Delmarva's 42 wins represents the most for a Shorebirds team since they finished the second half of 2005 as division champs with the same 42-27 record. Delmarva's 14-6 record this month is the best in the South Atlantic League. The Shorebirds begin the second half at Kannapolis on Thursday.
