A's take series opener, 9-1 over Orioles

It seems Jeremy Guthrie is not the pitcher to shut down the Oakland A's. The A's hit him hard for the second time this year in a 9-1 win over the Orioles on Monday night that started a seven-game homestand. Guthrie allowed a season-high 11 hits and five runs and is now 7-12, 5.43. In two starts vs. Oakland, he is 0-2, 18.57 and has allowed 11ER and 18 hits in 5 1/3 innings. The O's avoided their 8th shutout when Luke Scott led off the ninth with a solo homer, his 19th of the year and first since July 11th. Melvin Mora had a three-hit night. The Orioles have now lost nine in a row vs. Oakland. Lefty Gio Gonzalez did not allow a run for his second straight start and is now 4-2, 5.57. He has pitched to an ERA of 1.46 over his last four starts. Mark Ellis went 5 for 5 with 4 RBI for the A's, who have won six of their last eight games. His five hits set a new career high. Nick Markakis went 1 for 4 with a double. He has now reached base safely in 31 straight games, the current longest streak in the Majors. The Orioles have lost three in a row, five of six and 16 of the last 21 and are 6-18 since the All-Star break. Oak.....9-16-0 Balt......1-9-0
