Andrew Miller on playoff bullpen usage and other notes and quotes from the Game 1 win

The 1966 Orioles didn't do it. Neither did the great teams from 1969, '70 and '71. Or the 1983 World Series champs. None of them scored 12 runs in a playoff game. The Orioles' previous best was 11 runs four times before last night's 12-3 win over Detroit in Game 1 of the American League Division Series. The last time the O's scored 11 runs was Oct. 7, 1983 in Game 3 at the White Sox in the AL Championship Series. That date is also notable for this reason: The Orioles won that game 11-1 for a 10-run win. It is the only time in club postseason history that they won by more than nine runs. Yep, quite a start by the Orioles who looked on their way to winning a tense, tight grind-it-out game until they scored eight runs in the eighth inning for their biggest inning of 2014. In this game, we saw Andrew Miller pitch in the sixth inning, Darren O'Day the seventh and Zach Britton the eighth. Miller said he is aware he could be used in any inning and potentially for longer stretches in the playoffs. He threw 1 2/3 scoreless on 32 pitches last night. "I think we all know that and Buck (Showalter) definitely said something," Miller said. "There could be a situation where we are called on to get more outs. Zach went in in the eighth inning. I went in the sixth, Tommy (Hunter) was warming in the fifth. "It's a win at all costs and however you get to the finish line, you just want to make it there. I think we all have a little extra in the tank because of the excitement and just the buzz that the stadium brings in situations like this. We're ready at any moment." Last night's crowd of 47,842 was not only large, but loud. The players were appreciative of the support from the largest crowd of the 2014 season. "I told (Nick) Markakis he hadn't been on the field with the loudest O he's ever heard. So, today was probably the loudest one he's gotten in his career," center fielder Adam Jones said. As has been their custom since 2012, the Orioles were not very loud in their clubhouse postgame. In fact, it was almost subdued in there last night. "You want to win and celebrate today?" Jones said. "There's no celebration. We've got a lot of baseball to play and a lot more to do. We'll celebrate whenever we reach our goal." The O's offense had a lot of players contributing during that win. Five players had two hits and seven drove in runs as they went 6-for-11 with runners in scoring position. "Our style is not conventional," Jones said. "We hack. Sometimes we look like we have no idea what we're doing at the plate. But at some point in time, it clicks. Throughout the game, we had good at-bats against (Max) Scherzer and at the end against their bullpen." A few players said the atmosphere in the clubhouse was pretty loose before the game. "We're going to have some fun. Not going to sit here and stress," Jones said. "Obviously the importance of the game is a little different, but at the end of the day it's still a game and we're going to treat it like that." The Orioles had 12 hits in 35 at-bats with three doubles and two homers. "This time of year, you have to grind at-bats," Markakis said. "We're not facing fifth starters. We know what we're up against. Tonight we came out and played real good baseball." A few more notes from ALDS Game 1: * With his 15th career postseason homer, Nelson Cruz moved into a tie for 10th place all-time with Babe Ruth. Cruz has seven homers and 16 RBIs in seven career postseason games against Detroit. Cruz has three career playoff games of three of more RBIs, all coming against Detroit. * The Orioles are 9-5 all-time in ALDS play, going 5-2 at home and 4-3 on the road. The Tigers are 12-8, going 6-2 at home and 6-6 on the road. * Scherzer gave up four runs to snap a streak of four straight quality starts in the playoffs dating back to Oct. 28, 2012. * Alejandro De Aza had just five hits in 30 at-bats before he doubled twice in the eighth inning. He scored one and knocked in two that inning. * Markakis went 2-for-4. Over his last six games, he is 10-for-22 with two homers and seven RBIs. * J.J. Hardy ended the regular season going 3-for-30 and with no RBIs over his last 14 games. But he snapped that with a big homer in the seventh inning. At the time, it gave the Orioles a 4-2 lead. * In scoring 12 runs last night, the Orioles topped their total of 10 runs over five games in the 2012 ALDS against the Yankees.
