It was another day with little offense, another where the Orioles starter failed to get past the fifth inning, another where the bullpen gave up some late runs and another day when the Orioles could not get a win.
They completed a winless road trip, going 0-10 with today's 3-1 loss at Chicago to the White Sox, who completed a four-game sweep.
This was Chicago's first home four-game sweep versus the Orioles since June 1956.
This one produced a frustrating inning where a great chance to break the game open was missed.
Tied 1-1 in the Orioles sixth against the Chicago starter, right-hander Lucas Giolito, the Orioles loaded the bases with one out but could not score. It capped a weekend of struggles in which efforts to get a clutch hit were almost always unsuccessful.
After Pedro Severino struck out - Giolito's 11th strikeout in 5 1/3 innings to that point - Cedric Mullins dropped a bunt single down the third-base line and then stole second base. Walks to Freddy Galvis and Trey Mancini loaded the bases for Anthony Santander. But Giolito got ahead of him 0-2 and then put him away with a changeup for another strikeout. Maikel Franco fouled out to the catcher and that big chance went by the boards as the game remained 1-1.
That tie was broken against right-hander Dillon Tate in the last of the seventh. Tim Anderson singled, advanced to second on a steal and to third on Tate's error. He scored on Nick Madrigal's triple to right, and the White Sox made it 3-1 on Yoán Moncada's single to center field.
The Orioles went 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position on Thursday night in the opener of the four-game series as they lost 5-1. That followed a three-game series at Minnesota, where the Orioles scored just nine total runs and went 4-for-32 with RISP. On Saturday, the Orioles scored five runs total in both games of the doubleheader and were 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position. So they were 0-for-21 this series and 4-for-53 the last six games coming into the series finale.
Today, they added an 0-for-3 to that to finish 0-for-24 this series.
The Orioles are 0-21 when scoring two runs or fewer.
The Orioles come home after the winless trip at 17-36. They have lost 13 in a row, 17 of 18 and 20 of the past 22 games. They are winless the last 14 days since beating the Yankees at Camden Yards two weeks ago today.
They return home on Memorial Day Monday for an afternoon game with the Minnesota Twins at 1:10 p.m. Right-hander Jorge López (1-6, 5.80 ERA) faces righty José BerrÃos (5-2, 3.67 ERA) in the series opener. It's an eight-game homestand versus Minnesota, Cleveland and the New York Mets.
