As deadline approaches, O's still hope to sign a few more draft picks

Even though they have signed 14 of their first 15 and 18 of their first 21 draft picks, the Orioles are still trying to get a few more signed between now and the July 12 deadline to sign this year's picks. The most recent selection to agree to terms was right-handed pitcher Jon Keller, taken in round 22 out of the University of Tampa. He pitched for the University of Nebraska for his first two seasons. The Orioles' only remaining unsigned top 10 round pick is Drew Dosch, a third baseman from Youngstown State taken in round seven. The Orioles have made him an offer and open negotiation continues and the O's remain hopeful they'll sign Dosch, who was a Cape Cod League All-Star last summer and is called one of the better pure college hitters in this draft class after batting .338 with three homers and 30 RBIs for Youngstown. Dosch suffered a torn ACL in a May 17 game and underwent surgery June 4, but is expected to make a full recovery and be 100 percent by spring training next season. The Orioles are talking with some other picks, a list which could possibly include high school pitchers Daniel Ayers, taken in round 25, and Robert Tyler, taken in round 28. The O's 15th-round selection, Evansville, Ind., shortstop Tyler Walsh, told his local paper recently he expects to go college at Belmont University and not sign with the Orioles. But the O's have left the door open for him if he changes his mind. The Orioles reportedly have around $200,000 remaining to spend from their allotted draft pool of $6,387,900. Among their 10 signed first 10 round picks (they had 11 total), the Orioles signed five at the slot value for the pick, four under the slot value and one over slot value. They came in under with competitive balance round A pick Josh Hart at $1.45 million (slot value was $1,508,600), second-round pick Chance Sisco at $785,000 (slot value was $913,300), ninth-round pick Mitch Horacek at $100,000 (slot value was $141,900) and 10th-round pick Austin Wynns at $10,000 (slot value was $135,300). The Orioles went over the slot on sixth-round pick Alex Murphy at $275,000 (slot value was $218,500) and 12th-round pick Jacob Bray at $200,000. Any pick from the 11th round on can sign for up to $100,000 and any amount over that counts against the club's total draft pool and is considered an over slot signing.
