The Washington Nationals, in conjunction with Major League Baseball, announced their 2023 schedule on Wednesday. The 19th season of Nationals baseball will commence with an Opening Day matchup at home against the Atlanta Braves on Thursday, March 30. Opening Day 2023 will mark the fifth time the Nationals (2005-pres.) have faced the Braves on Opening Day.

The 2023 season will be the first to feature a balanced schedule for all 30 Clubs across Major League Baseball since Interleague Play was introduced in 1997. Each of the 30 Clubs will play against one another, and in addition, each of the 30 Clubs will host every other Club in their home market at least once every other season. Specific features of the new balanced schedule include: 

• Division Games
• 52 total games against divisional opponents (decreased from 76)
• 13 games (four total series) against each divisional opponent (decreased from 19 games across six series), including seven home games and six away games (or vice versa), for a total of 26 home games and 26 away games

• Intraleague Games
• 64 total games (32 home games and 32 away games) against non-divisional league opponents (decreased from 66)
• Clubs will play six games against six league opponents, and seven games against four league opponents (previous format was reversed with six games against four league opponents, and seven games against six league opponents)

• Interleague Games
• 46 total games against interleague opponents (increased from 20)
• Clubs will play a home and home series against their natural rivals (four games total)
• Clubs will play 42 games against other interleague opponents, including seven series (21 games) at home and seven series (21 games) on the road

Washington’s initial homestand will feature three games against the Braves before a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays, Monday through Wednesday, April 3-5. The Nationals will host 13 homestands and 14 weekend series during the 2023 season. No homestand will be longer than nine games. Washington’s first road trip will take the team to Colorado, April 6-9, and Los Angeles to face the Angels, April 10-12.

The annual Beltway Series vs. the Baltimore Orioles will renew April 18-19 at Nationals Park, and Washington will travel to Baltimore during the final road trip of the season, Sept. 26-27.

Including their first road trip of the season, the Nationals will make four visits to the West Coast by the end of June. They play at the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Francisco Giants May 5-10; at the Los Angeles Dodgers May 29-31; and at San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners June 23-28.

The Orioles today announced the 2023 regular season schedule, which will open in Boston on Thursday, March 30. After three games with the Red Sox, Baltimore continues its opening road trip with a three-game set at the Texas Rangers from April 3-5. Baltimore welcomes the New York Yankees to Oriole Park for the Home Opener on Thursday, April 6. The opening homestand of the season features three games against the Yankees before a four-game set with the Oakland Athletics from April 10-13.

ALL ABOUT BALANCE: Major League Baseball’s new balanced schedule will see all 30 teams play each other for at least one series during the season. Every team in MLB will play fewer divisional games to account for those games. Teams will play divisional opponents for two series at home and two series on the road.

DIVISION RIVALS: The Orioles will not face AL East divisional opponents the same number of times with the new schedule format. Baltimore will play Boston, New York, and Tampa Bay for 13 games apiece, while facing Toronto 12 times. Baltimore hosts the Red Sox and Rays for seven games and the Yankees and Blue Jays for six games at Oriole Park.

WEEKEND WARRIORS: Baltimore hosts 13 weekend series, including four against American League East foes the Yankees (April 6-9 and July 28-30), Rays (September 14-17), and Red Sox (September 28-October 1).

HOLIDAY SCHEDULE: The 2023 home schedule features three games played on holidays, including Easter Sunday (April 9 vs. Yankees), Mother’s Day (May 14 vs. Pittsburgh Pirates), and Memorial Day (May 29 vs. Cleveland Guardians).

Adams, 26, returns for his second stint in the Major Leagues this season after making the club out of Spring Training. He hit .192 with a double, three home runs, five RBI, and nine walks in 27 games with Washington. After he was optioned to Triple-A Rochester on July 1, Adams hit .224 with eight doubles, four home runs, 17 RBI and 11 walks in 29 games.

Fedde, 29, returns from the Injured List after missing 22 games with right shoulder inflammation. Before heading to the IL on July 30, he was 5-7 with a 4.95 ERA in 19 starts. He allowed 96 hits and struck out 70 in 92.2 innings. In his only rehab appearance for Triple-A Rochester, Fedde worked 4.0 scoreless innings with four strikeouts on August 17 at Worcester.

Clippard, 37, was 0-0 with a 7.20 ERA in four games for Washington this season.

Barrera, 27, hit .182 with a double, four RBI and two walks in 14 games for the Nationals in 2022.

The Washington Nationals recalled outfielder Josh Palacios from Triple-A Rochester and placed outfielder Yadiel Hernandez on the 10-day Injured List (retroactive to Aug. 19) with a left calf strain on Saturday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Palacios, 27, returns for his second stint with the Nationals after leading Washington’s Minor League system in batting average (.298) and on-base percentage (.382) this season. He hit .298/.382/.433 with 12 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 44 RBI, 33 walks, 19 stolen bases and 43 runs scored in 76 games with Triple-A Rochester prior to this promotion to Washington.

Palacios appeared in eight games for the Nationals after being recalled on Aug. 2. He collected three hits while appearing in right field (5 G/4 GS) and left field (1 G).

Hernandez, 34, hit .269 with 16 doubles, nine homers, 41 RBI, 19 walks, two stolen bases and 30 runs scored in 94 games this season.

The Washington Nationals recalled shortstop C.J. Abrams from Triple-A Rochester and placed infielder Luis García on the 10-day Injured List (retroactive to Aug. 13) with a left groin strain on Monday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Abrams, 21, is Washington’s No. 1 prospect and the No. 11 overall prospect in baseball according to Baseball America. Acquired on Aug. 2 from San Diego, Abrams hit .290 (9-for-31) with two doubles, two RBI, two walks and four stolen bases in eight games for Triple-A Rochester.

The 6-foot-2, 189-pound Abrams was San Diego’s No. 1 prospect and the No. 9 prospect in all of baseball entering the 2022 season, according to both Baseball America and MLBPipeline.com. He was cited by Baseball America as being the “best hitter” and having the “best speed” in all of Minor League baseball entering the 2022 season.

Abrams made San Diego’s Opening Day roster and his Major League debut this season, starting the second game of the season at shortstop. He hit .232 with five doubles, two home runs, 11 RBI, four walks, one stolen base and 16 runs scored in 46 games across two Major League stints with the Padres this season.

He was selected to represent the Padres in the 2021 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game. He has been cited by Baseball America as the “best defensive infielder” (2021, 2022), “best athlete” (2020-22), “fastest baserunner” (2020-22) and “best hitter for average” (2020-22) in San Diego’s Minor League system throughout his professional career. Following the 2019 season, he was named the Most Valuable Player in the rookie-level Arizona League and to Baseball America’s Rookie All-Star team.

The Washington Nationals recalled outfielder Alex Call from Triple-A Rochester and optioned outfielder Josh Palacios to Triple-A Rochester on Sunday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Call, 27, hit .292 with 18 doubles, one triple, 13 home runs, 52 RBI, 51 walks, nine stolen bases and 62 runs scored in 76 games between Triple-A Columbus (CLE) and Triple-A Rochester this season. He posted a .423 on-base percentage and a .521 slugging percentage in his sixth professional season in 2022.

The Nationals acquired Call off waivers from the Cleveland Guardians on Aug. 7. He went 8-for-18 (.444) with two doubles, two homers, six RBI, two walks, three stolen bases and six runs scored in five games with the Red Wings. This will be his second Major League stint of the season after he made his Major League debut on July 11 at Chicago (AL). He went 2-for-12 with four walks and two runs scored in 12 games for the Guardians.

Call was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the third round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft out of Ball State (IN) University. He was acquired by the Guardians in exchange for Yonder Alonso on Dec. 14, 2018.

Palacios, 27, went 3-for-16 (.188) with a double and two runs scored in eight games for the Nationals.

Clippard, 37, appeared in one game for the Nationals before being placed on the Injured List with a groin strain on July 22. He tossed 2.0 innings of one-hit, shutout relief on July 14 vs. Atlanta. Clippard appeared in three rehab games with Triple-A Rochester, tossing 4.0 innings of scoreless relief across the three outings.

McGee, 36, was claimed off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers on Aug. 9. He appeared in 30 games between San Francisco and Milwaukee in 2022, going 1-2 with three saves and a 7.00 ERA along the way. A veteran of 13 Major League seasons, McGee has pitched to a 3.67 ERA with 79 saves in 638 career games. He recorded a career-high 31 saves with San Francisco in 2021.

Machado, 29, is 1-0 with a 4.57 ERA in 38 games for the Nationals this season.

The Taylor Hooton Foundation is widely acknowledged as the leader in the advocacy against the use of Appearance and Performance Enhancing Substances by the youth of America.

The Orioles catcher joins 26 other members of the Hooton Foundation’s “Advisory Board,” which will include at least one player from all 30 major-league teams.

“We’re thrilled to have Adley join an incredible group of major-league players who have stepped up to serve as positive role models,” said Taylor Hooton Foundation President Donald Hooton, Jr. “We’re also very proud of the support that Major League Baseball and these elite athletes provide in sending a positive message to kids that they, too, can accomplish all of their dreams without the use of drugs. As members of the “Advisory Board” – formed in 2014 and fully endorsed by Major League Baseball – the players are participating in the THF’s 2022 public-service campaign, ALL ME®. For the campaign, a print PSA featuring each of the Foundation’s “Advisory Board” members has been created – with images provided by THF national partner, Getty Images – and will be made available to each player’s respective team for its program/magazine and other team platforms for the ‘22 season. The Baltimore Orioles today announced that they have acquired outfielder BRETT PHILLIPS from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for cash considerations. The Orioles’ 40-man roster currently has 40 players.

Phillips, 28, slashed .147/.225/.250 (27-for-184) with four doubles, five home runs, 21 runs scored, 14 RBI, and seven stolen bases over 75 games with the Rays this season. He ranked in the top two percent of Major League Baseball with 10 Outs Above Average, according to Statcast. In 347 career games between Tampa Bay, Kansas City, and Milwaukee, Phillips has hit .190/.276/.350 (147-for-774) with 22 doubles, nine triples, 28 home runs, 112 runs scored, 92 RBI, and 36 stolen bases. He was originally selected by the Houston Astros in the sixth round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft.

Meneses, 30, leads Washington’s Minor League system with 20 home runs and 64 RBI, 107 hits and 183 total bases. He ranks among Nationals Minor Leaguers in slugging percentage (2^nd, .489), OPS (2^nd, .830), batting average (3^rd, .286) and extra-base hits (T3^rd, 35).

After 10 Minor League seasons, Meneses will make his Major League debut with his first appearance. He is a career .281/.338/.431 hitter with 174 doubles, 25 triples, 87 home runs, 439 RBI, 272 walks, 10 stolen bases and 381 runs scored in 894 career Minor League games. He was originally signed by the Atlanta Braves as a non-drafted free agent on May 9, 2011.

Palacios, 27, hit .299 with 11 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 44 RBI, 30 walks, 18 stolen bases and 39 runs scored in 72 games with Triple-A Rochester. He ranks among Nationals farmhands in on-base percentage (2^nd, .378), batting average (2^nd, .299), OPS (5^th, .815), slugging percentage (8^th, .437), stolen bases (7^th, 18) and RBI (9^th, 44).

Palacios made his Major League debut in 2021, appearing in 13 games with the Toronto Blue Jays. He went 7-for-35 (.200) with four RBI, three walks and seven runs scored. Palacios was acquired off waivers from the Blue Jays on April 15 after six seasons in their organization. He was originally selected in the fourth round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft out of Auburn (AL) University.
