Beckham could undergo surgery (and other notes)

The Orioles could be without third baseman Tim Beckham for a much longer period than the minimum 10 days of his assignment on the disabled list.

Beckham-Throws-Black-Sidebar.jpgBeckham saw a specialist today in Philadelphia and is expected to undergo surgery, perhaps by Thursday morning, after the Orioles put him on the DL with a strained left groin. Beckham is weighing his options, which would include rehabbing the injury.

The procedure apparently would be similar to sports hernia surgery, but little information has filtered out for privacy reasons and the HIPAA law.

Beckham, who's batting .179/.247/.262 in 23 games, could miss the next six-to-seven weeks if he undergoes surgery. Danny Valencia figures to get most of the starts at third base, though Jace Peterson also can move around the infield.

The club also could look outside the organization. Manager Buck Showalter said the Orioles always are looking to put their "best foot forward."

The latest injury to strike is another step backward for a team that's lost 11 of its last 13 games.

Jonathan Schoop is making good progress in his recovery from a strained oblique, but he might be another seven-to-10 days away.

Zach Britton did more fielding drills today and will throw off a full mound again on Thursday.

Mark Trumbo will work out at Camden Yards Thursday and join Triple-A Norfolk for games Friday through Sunday in Charlotte.

Pitcher Cody Sedlock, a first-round pick in 2016, received a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right shoulder. He's on Single-A Frederick's disabled list. The injury has been described as a "strain."

Chris Tillman will start Friday night's series opener against the Tigers at Camden Yards. Everyone in the rotation is pushed back after yesterday's postponement. No one is skipped.
