Berry joining Orioles

Orioles manager Buck Showalter told reporters earlier today that the club would add another position player to the expanded roster on Tuesday. As expected, it's outfielder Quintin Berry. I've received confirmation that Berry is headed to Baltimore and will be placed on the 40-man roster. Berry was hitting .285/.382/.367 in 112 games with Norfolk. He had 19 doubles, one triple, three homers, 35 RBIs and 25 stolen bases. Berry, another left-handed bat for the bench, is 24-for-24 in stolen bases over parts of two major leagues seasons - most recently 13 games with the Red Sox in 2013. He's 5-for-5 in the playoffs. Sounds like a pinch-runner and defensive replacement to me. Showalter is searching for ways to rest Nick Markakis and Adam Jones, and it's much easier now with Berry and Alejandro De Aza in the fold. Berry is close friends with Jones. Norfolk radio broadcaster Pete Michaud first tweeted that Berry was joining the Orioles. Jones has tied the club record by being hit by pitches in three straight games, joining Brady Anderson (1996), Chris Hoiles (1996) and Frank Robinson (1968). Kevin Gausman retired the Twins in order in the first inning, striking out Danny Santana and Joe Mauer. He threw eight of 10 pitches for strikes. Showalter talked about the positive qualities that left-hander Joe Saunders brings to the Orioles in his second stint with the team. "It's a seamless fit in the clubhouse," Showalter said. "It's a guy that everybody knows. He's pitched some big games for us and kind of a semi-local guy and knows his way around. Kind of fits into what we're trying to do here. "Joe's a pretty versatile guy. Somebody walks in here at 6:15 and can't start, you can hand the ball to Joe. He'd be an option to do that."
