For Manny Machado, it all started in early June. What began then at Double-A Bowie was a process of Machado starting to take early work before batting practice at third base and it all eventually led to his call-up to Baltimore, where the natural shortstop would play third base.
He is playing there after starting in all of two games this year at Bowie at third.
But Machado obviously took to the position and the Orioles' minor league coaches could see in early June that he would do well at...
When Adam Jones blasted Josh Kinney's pitch over the fence in the 11th inning in Seattle to help the Orioles gain a sweep of the Mariners, he made Major League Baseball history.
Jones is the first player ever to have at least four homers in the 11th inning or later in one season. That great stat comes from Elias Sports.
Jones is batting .261 (6-for-23) when he hits in extra innings in 2012, and four of the six hits are homers. He has 10 RBIs and an OPS of 1.153 when batting in extra frames....
So who is happier that the Orioles have played their last West Coast game: the Orioles or the Orioles fans? The last few days have been very taxing on a fan base that must be tired but happy today.
Buck Showalter has told a version of the story several times since he took over as O's manager.
He said his players should always remember that, while they are playing a West Coast game in a place like Seattle, somewhere back in Baltimore some fans are watching at 12:30 or 1 a.m., hanging on...
Just when you thought this might go 18 innings again, Adam Jones hits a game-winning homer.
With one out in the top of the 11th, Nate McLouth singled off Seattle's Josh Kinney. Jones followed with a two-run shot to left and the Orioles had a 3-1, 11-inning victory over the Mariners to sweep this series.
This is the Orioles' first three-game sweep in Seattle since May 16-18, 1997, the last year they made the playoffs.
For Jones, it was his 30th homer and 19 of them have either tied the game...
So how much will the Orioles have left in the tank as they try for a three-game sweep in Seattle tonight?
You could almost understand it if the team lost to Felix Hernandez tonight. Not feel good about it, but understand it. The team has met just about every challenge this year and here is the latest. I'm sure they realize the Mariners played 18 innings, too, so both teams have to try and find the energy and intensity this evening.
Here is a stunning stat: Over his last three starts,...
Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette said Dylan Bundy will be available out of the O's bullpen tonight and for now, his role is in the 'pen and not as a starter.
"We brought him up today to support the bullpen," Duquette told MASNsports.com. "Our immediate need is we may need some innings for tonight's game. Long-term, we think he's going to be a starter in the big leagues. But sometimes it's best to have pitchers get their feet wet out of the bullpen, right? That is where...
The man that set up the pitching program for Dylan Bundy this year, director of pitching development Rick Peterson, believes the Orioles' top pitching prospect will do well in the majors after his call-up today.
"I think he's going to handle it fine. In my opinion, this is what Dylan expected. He's put himself in this position," Peterson said of the 19-year-old. "Emotionally he will be totally fine. He won't be overwhelmed."
Peterson set up a plan where Bundy threw just a few innings...
After using eight pitchers in an 18-inning win at Seattle that ended at 3:54 this morning, the Orioles are in need of some bolstering to their pitching staff.
One pitcher they plan to add to the roster is 2011 first-round draft pick, right-hander Dylan Bundy, a source confirms.
The 19-year-old Bundy went 9-3 with a 2.08 ERA in 23 starts split between low Single-A Delmarva, high Single-A Frederick and Double-A Bowie this season. He last pitched on Sept. 5 for the Baysox in a playoff game vs....
Well that was just an amazing and exhausting and, yes, very important Orioles win.
In a game that ended at 3:54 a.m. EST, the Orioles beat the Mariners 4-2 in 18 innings. With the win, the Orioles improved to 84-64 and moved into a first-place tie with the Yankees and within a half-game of Oakland for the top AL wild card spot.
In the top of the 18th, Nate McLouth led off with a walk and moved to third on a hit-and-run single by J.J. Hardy. The O's moved ahead 3-2 when pinch-hitter Taylor...
Matt Wieters is having another strong September for the Orioles. You would think at such a demanding position as catcher that it would be more the norm to see his offense fall off as the season goes on.
But September has been Wieters' best offensive month during his four-year career. He is a career .298 batter with 17 homers and 58 RBIs in 88 career September starts. Those are all his best numbers for any month of the season, as are his September slugging percentage of .508 and OPS of...
Outfielder Nate McLouth, who was hitting .140 earlier this year and got released by the Pirates, is now thriving with the Orioles. He is batting .306 in 16 games this month.
How did he go from such a low point to playing so well for the Orioles in a pennant race?
The answer is McLouth put in the time to work on his hitting while he was with Triple-A Norfolk in June and July. He was very open to the coaching there from Tides batting coach Denny Walling and O's minor league hitting coordinator...
The Orioles welcomed Chris Tillman back to their rotation tonight by scoring seven early runs for him. Tillman may not have needed that many to once again beat the team that drafted him in the second round in 2006.
Out since Sept. 2 with right elbow discomfort, Tillman gave up just three hits and one run over six innings as the Orioles routed the Mariners 10-4 in Game 1 of a three-game series.
The Orioles improved to 83-64 with their 28th win in the last 41 games and moved to within a...
The Orioles picked up tonight where they left off on offense Sunday in Oakland.
A day after getting nine runs in a win over the A's, the Orioles scored three in the first inning and four in the second tonight to take a 7-1 lead after two innings at Seattle.
It started with the first batter when Nate McLouth homered to right on an 0-2 pitch for his eighth career leadoff homer. Later in the inning, Mark Reynolds produced an RBI infield hit and Manny Machado plated a run with a single up the...
Let's point this out first about the Seattle Mariners: They may be a last-place team, but before anyone thinks the Orioles will walk right into SafeCo Field and rip off three easy wins, consider that the Mariners have the AL's fourth-best record since the All-Star break.
.683 - Oakland (41-19)
.607 - Orioles (37-24)
.583 - Texas (35-25)
.567 - Seattle (34-26)
The Mariners also have the third-best ERA in the American League at 3.76, meaning that over these last three series the O's have...
The Orioles just went through a four-game stretch against Tampa Bay and Oakland where they scored 10 total runs. But they broke out of that by scoring nine Sunday in Oakland. In the nine games before, all that they scored 60 runs.
The point is the Orioles' offense has picked up and so far, they are putting up better numbers in September than they have in any previous month.
The Orioles are scoring 5.46 runs per game this month and the next best is the 4.79 they produced in May. The team...
Based on their play this season against the teams remaining on their schedule, the Orioles seem to have a real good shot at a very strong finish, one that might be good enough for them to win their first AL East title since 1997.
The Orioles are one game behind the Yankees with 16 to play and here are the remaining opponents for both teams:
Orioles:
3 at Seattle
3 at Boston
4 vs. Toronto
3 vs. Boston
3 at Tampa Bay
Yankees:
3 vs. Toronto
3 vs. Oakland
3 at Minnesota
4 at Toronto
3 vs....
Needing a win to avoid being swept in Oakland and to remain just one game out of first place, the Orioles got one as their offense produced 13 hits in a 9-5 win over the A's.
The Orioles won for just the third time in 19 games since 2008 in Oakland and improved to 82-64 on the year. They sit a game behind the Yankees in the AL East and remain 2 1/2 games ahead of the Angels for the AL's second wild card berth.
It almost seems a bit of an afterthought but, with this win, the Orioles...
In an attempt to win today's game at Oakland, the Orioles are counting on a 36-year-old left-hander who won just three of his 24 starts with the Brewers this year and who has pitched just 1/3 of an inning over the last nine days.
At least Randy Wolf is rested.
You can tell that the fact that Wolf is getting the ball for today's game has some fans nervous, and we'll see how he does. He did go 3-10 with an ERA of 5.69 for Milwaukee, and he went 0-4 with an ERA of 6.53 over his last four...
First of all, let me say that it is your right as a fan to have any opinion of the Orioles that you do. But it is my right to not agree with you.
I disagree with several of you today.
Between this blog and Twitter I saw some interesting comments after last night's game:
"Well....it has been an excellent run."
"I fear it is over."
"There is no way the Orioles can be in a pennant race with Chavez in the lineup."
This reminds of one we got a lot earlier this year, "How much longer can...
It's been a rough two nights for the Orioles in Oakland. A loss there Friday cost them a chance to move into sole possession of first place, while tonight's loss dropped the Orioles out of a first-place tie in the AL East.
The Birds fell one game back of the Yankees, who won this afternoon, with a 5-2 loss at Oakland. The Orioles continue to hold the second wild card spot in the AL, leading the Angels by 2 1/2 games.
The Orioles fall to 81-64 and have now lost back-to-back games for the...
