Branden Kline experiencing more elbow discomfort (plus other notes)

A light rain is falling at Camden Yards and the tarp is on the field. No batting practice.

Orioles pitching prospect Branden Kline left yesterday's fall instructional league game with tightness in his right elbow. Team orthopedist Dr. Michael Jacobs will examine Kline, and the Orioles also will set up an appointment with Dr. James Andrews.

Kline, a second-round pick in 2012 out of the University of Virginia, was shut down after a May 20 game due to elbow soreness and received a platelet-rich plasma injection from Andrews. He went 3-3 with a 3.66 ERA in eight starts at Double-A Bowie.

Kline turned 24 today.

Orioles Camden Yards tarp.jpgThe Orioles' rotation for the rest of the season includes Miguel Gonzalez tonight, Kevin Gausman on Wednesday and rookie Tyler Wilson on Thursday against the Blue Jays. Left-hander Wei-Yin Chen will start Friday night against the Yankees, followed by Chris Tillman on Saturday. Tillman will be working on normal rest.

Manager Buck Showalter will choose between Gonzalez and Ubaldo Jimenez on Sunday. He would like to give Gonzalez a second start, but he wants to see how the right-hander fares tonight. He also intends to speak with Jimenez and "see what he wants to do."

Of course, the weather could disrupt the rotation. Tonight's forecast is brutal and Showalter said playing the game "could be a challenge." He also joked about the possibility of playing a tripleheader on Monday with the Jays and Yankees.

"Don't make any plans," he said.

Center fielder Adam Jones remains day-to-day with tightness in his back.

"He's still a little stiff back there," Showalter said.

Showalter said bench coach John Russell informed him today that the Orioles were eliminated from playoff contention early this morning with the Astros' victory in Seattle.

"It's self-inflicted," Showalter said. "We knew it was going to be a tough climb in September."

Players already have started to pack up their belongings.

"The first time you see those boxes in the clubhouse, it's not fun," Showalter said.

I'll pass along more comments in my next entry.
