Brian Goodwin named Arizona Fall League Player of the Week

Nationals outfield prospect Brian Goodwin scorched the ball the last few games for the Salt River Rafters and was honored as the Arizona Fall League Player of the Week. Rafters and Nationals minor league rehab pitching coach Mark Grater said Goodwin was sent to Arizona in part to get better at bunting, and the multi-talented player now leads the league in slugging percentage (.667) with nine extra-base hits, also a league-high total. Here is what the Arizona Fall League release said about Goodwin's exploits: Last week, Goodwin hit .529 (9-17) with two doubles, two triples, one home run, two RBIs, six runs, five walks and one stolen base. He led the league in batting average, slugging percentage (.636) and OPS (1.059). The Nationals' prospect enters the season's fourth week as the league leader in slugging percentage (.744), extra-base hits (9) and total bases (32). He also ranks second in OPS (1.299), third in runs (11) and tied for third in home runs (three). The 21-year-old played at Class-A Hagerstown (.324, nine homers, 38 RBIs in 58 games) and Double-A Harrisburg (.223, five homers, 14 RBIs in 42 games) in 2012, his first minor league season. Washington made the Rocky Mount, N.C., native the 34th selection in the 2011 draft as a compensatory pick out of Miami Dade (Fla.) Community College South.
