Caleb Joseph on facing Bud Norris (Orioles win 6-4)

LOS ANGELES - The Orioles trail the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1 this afternoon in the third inning against their former teammate, pitcher Bud Norris. Justin Turner hit a two-run homer in the first off Kevin Gausman. The dinger was No. 12 for Turner and it came on a 1-0, 94 mph fastball.

The Orioles got one back in the second. Mark Trumbo was credited with a leadoff double when his high pop that should have been caught got lost in the sun by the left side of the Dodgers infield. Two batters later, the All-Star scored on a Ryan Flaherty RBI double to right.

In the O's clubhouse this morning, catcher Caleb Joseph looked ahead to facing Norris today.

"He pitched a lot of meaningful games for us for two years. It will be interesting to see the strategy involved here. We know what he likes to do and he knows what we like to do. So, it will be a fun chess game out there."

Joseph said Norris still has a very good slider, likes to try and pound right-handed hitters with down and away fastballs and that he has added a cut fastball that he has been working on and the O's have seen in scouting reports.

Joseph said Norris was helpful to him when they were both on the Orioles.

"He was a great teammate to me. It was my first year, and he helped to guide me into what you needed to be as a catcher in the big leagues from a pitcher's standpoint and that was extremely helpful. He pitched a lot of good games for us. Happy to see him having a good season, hopefully just not today," he said.

O's tied it: The Orioles evened the score 2-2 in the top of the third. Adam Jones singled and advanced to third on Hyun Soo Kim's single to center. When Manny Machado bounced into a 6-4-3 double play, a run scored for the tie.

O's got lead: Trumbo started the fourth with a homer to right-center field off an 0-2 Norris fastball that gave the Orioles a 3-2 lead. It was No. 25 for Trumbo, who began the day as the American League home run leader by one over Chicago's Todd Frazier.

Norris got Jones to fly out to end a threat and strand two runners later in that inning. He walked Flaherty with one out and Gausman reached when he worked an 11-pitch walk with two outs. Through four innings, the Orioles are 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position. Norris is at 81 pitches.

Fit to be tied in the sixth: The Dodgers went ahead 4-3 in the fifth on an Adrian Gonzalez two-out, two-run bloop single to center. The hit scored runners from first and second running on the 3-2 pitch.

In the O's sixth, Trumbo homered again. His second solo shot of the game made it 4-4. Trumbo has five multi-homer games this year and 12 in his career. He has hit his 25th and 26th homers today.

The O's pinch-hit Dariel Alvarez for Gausman in the sixth and Dylan Bundy came on to pitch the bottom of the inning, taking him out of consideration to be the starting pitcher Friday night. Gausman allowed eight hits and four runs over six frames.

Bundy's escape act: Bundy had an impressive two innings today, pitching in the sixth and seventh. He struck out the side after allowing a leadoff double in the sixth. In the seventh, Bundy surrendered a Chase Utley single and Corey Seager double to put runners on second and third with no outs. He then struck out Justin Turner and walked Adrian Gonzalez intentionally to load up the bases. Next, Bundy fanned Trayce Thompson and Howie Kendrick to record a great escape and keep the game tied at 4-4. The strikeout of Thompson was particularly impressive, as he fell behind 3-0 in the count. Over his last 14 innings, Bundy has not allowed an earned run. The righty was peppering 97 on the radar gun today. The O's will try to pull this one out late.

O's win in 14: The Orioles and Dodgers played 14 innings today and the O's offense finally re-awakened. Jonathan Schoop's two-run double broke the tie in the 14th and lifted the Orioles to a 6-4 win over Los Angeles. They end the road trip at 4-5 and head home with a 49-35 record.

Neither team had scored since the sixth inning when the O's came to bat. Machado and Chris Davis singled with one out. Schoop lined one to left center. Center fielder Trayce Thompson dove for it and the ball hit the ground and kicked off his glove as both runners raced home. Schoop had been 0-for-5 in the game.

From the sixth into the 13th inning, the Orioles went 0-for-21 with 12 strikeouts, but they outlasted the Dodgers in the longest game of the year in terms of time and innings.

O's pitchers got many big outs in this game, keeping Los Angeles off the board after the Dodgers had taken a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning.

Mychal Givens got the win in relief and Zach Britton picked up his 25th save in 25 chances. After this marathon game, check back here later for an entry with a wrap up and postgame quotes.
