BRADENTON, Fla. - The Orioles brought four catchers to McKechnie Field today, including Ryan Lavarnway, who's starting behind the plate.
Lavarnway's chances of making the club improved with news that Matt Wieters would begin the season on the disabled list. He could back up Caleb Joseph, who figures to make most of the starts due to his plus defensive skills.
"I've been happy with my camp so far," Lavarnway said. "I think as far as where I stand, that's a better question for Buck (Showalter) or Dan (Duquette). But I feel really comfortable and I'm just trying my best."
Lavarnway is 5-for-19 with two doubles and an RBI this spring, and he's 1-for-6 throwing out runners attempting to steal. He's 10-for-63 in his major league career.
Showalter will place heavy emphasis on defense and handling of pitchers while deciding on a backup.
"I think as a catcher, defense is always a huge priority," Lavarnway said. "I'm just trying to do my best in every aspect of the game and let the chips fall where they may."
One of the challenges this spring is getting acquainted with a new pitching staff.
"I'm just trying to learn each guy, kind of what makes them tick and what their strengths are and how I can get the best out of each one of them," said Lavarnway, who was selected off waivers from the Cubs in December and outrighted a month later.
"Each time that you catch the same guy over and over, it gets better. You kind of know where they want to go in different counts, what strengths they have, what they feel comfortable throwing. So the first time you catch everybody, you're kind of searching through the first couple of innings, but once you go through a couple more times, it's easier."
Lavarnway appeared in six games at first base with the Red Sox last season, making two starts. The Orioles value versatility in their players, but Lavarnway has been focusing on his work behind the plate.
"I definitely prefer being a catcher. I'm willing to do whatever they want me to do, but I prefer to catch," he said.
"The way the roster worked for them last year, that's what they asked me to do."
