Chaz Roe talks about his callup to the Orioles

SEATTLE - After clearing waivers April 1 and heading to Triple-A Norfolk, right-hander Chaz Roe pitched quite well this year on the farm and he rejoined the Orioles yesterday at Safeco Field.

Manager Buck Showalter said Roe was throwing as well as anyone in Norfolk and the O's added him to their bullpen on Thursday. With the Tides, Roe went 1-2 with a 2.39 ERA. His last 15 outings were scoreless, covering 15 2/3 innings with two walks and 15 strikeouts.

"Went down there to work on a few things," Roe said this afternoon in the Orioles clubhouse. "I struggled early getting lefties out. Starting throwing the cutter and it's helped me out a lot. Being able to keep that in the zone a lot more. A big pitch for me.

"I didn't use it all last year. I just kind of messed with it a little bit early in the year. When lefties started hitting me pretty well, the slider (cutter) just helps me keep more of harder slider in the zone."

Roe went 4-2 with a 4.14 ERA in 36 games for the Orioles last year. He had an ERA of 2.67 before the All-Star break. He went on the DL in August with right shoulder tendinitis.

Showalter said he has gotten back to pitching this season as he did for the Orioles early last year.

"He pitched real well for us for an extended period of time and I think he kind of ran out of gas last year," Showalter said. "Now he's kind of back to where he was. About two or three times, we came close to adding him."

It's believed Roe could have opted out of his Triple-A deal at some point, but he stayed with Norfolk and is here now. He's had success and is thrilled to be an Oriole again.

"Absolutely. I love this organization," he said. "I love the people here. The team is unbelievable. To get the opportunity to come back here and help these guys out, love it."
