SARASOTA, Fla. - Left-hander Wei-Yin Chen became the first Orioles pitcher today to work three innings this spring, shutting out the Yankees on one hit.
Kevin Gausman replaced Chen in the fourth and escaped a jam after allowing back-to-back singles to Chase Headley and Mark Teixeira. J.R. Murphy grounded into a 6-4-3 double play and Jose Pirela bounced to short.
Gausman will return for the fifth after working only one inning in his spring debut.
Chen walked a batter and struck out two. He threw 41 pitches, 27 for strikes.
Chen started the game by striking out Didi Gregorius and also fanned Ramon Flores leading off the third, when he retired the side in order. Strong start, better finish.
Headley singled with two outs in the first and Pirela walked with one out in the second. Pirela stole second base, but was stranded.
Chen has tossed five scoreless innings, with only two hits allowed, in two Grapefruit League starts.
The game is still scoreless in the fourth and both teams have two hits.
Manny Machado has accounted for both Orioles hits from the leadoff spot, singling in the first and doubling in the third. He also stole a base in the first inning and made a terrific play to retire Gregorius in the third, charging the ball and firing to first for the out.
Chris Davis has walked and grounded into a double play. Ryan Lavarnway and J.J. Hardy also have walked.
