Chicago takes early lead on Tillman and the O's (Orioles lose 4-2)

CHICAGO - In search of his 15th win tonight, Orioles right-hander Chris Tillman gave up single runs in the first and third innings as the White Sox took an early lead in Game 2 of this three-game series.

White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson smoked a double to lead off the home half of the first inning and then Melky Cabrera, batting second, doubled him in for a 1-0 lead. Tillman stranded Cabrera at second, but needed 25 pitches in the first.

After he retired Chicago 1-2-3 on just six pitches in the second, Tillman fell behind 2-0 in the third. No. 9 hitter, Tyler Saladino homered to left. He hit a line drive over the left-field fence that went 369 feet on an 0-1 changeup to make it a 2-0 lead.

The Orioles missed a chance to take the lead in the top of the first. Adam Jones blooped a double to right, just off the glove of Saladino in short right field and Jonathan Schoop singled to center to put runners on first and third. But lefty Carlos Rodon then struck out three straight Orioles as he got Manny Machado, Mark Trumbo and Steve Pearce to end the threat.

The Orioles got one back in the fourth to trail 2-1 on J.J. Hardy's ground-rule, RBI double. Trumbo singled with one out and Chris Davis walked with two down. Hardy's double to right one-hopped the fence and probably cost the Orioles the tying run. When Nolan Reimold grounded out, the O's stranded runners at second and third.

Rodon (2-8, 4.67 ERA) needed 46 pitches to get the first nine outs, but threw 30 in that fourth frame while Tillman (14-3, 3.46 ERA) needed 51 through three. The Orioles began the night at 62-46 and tied for first in the American League East. But they trail 2-1 in the fourth tonight.

It's fit to be tied: The Orioles tied it 2-2 in the sixth on an unearned run. Machado led off with a single and one out later advanced to second on an error by shortstop Tim Anderson. He booted what probably should have been a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. But Davis walked to load the bases and Hardy's sac fly tied it 2-2. He has both O's RBIs.

Not anymore though: Chicago produced four straight singles off two O's pitchers to score a run in the last of the seventh for a 3-2 lead. The first two singles came off Tillman and the last two off Mychal Givens. With the bases loaded and no outs, Omar Narvaez hit a bloop down the left-field line. Third baseman Manny Machado, running with his back to the plate, reached for the ball and could not field it. It hit just foul - at least that was the ruling on the field. Chicago asked for a replay review. The call was overturned to fair ball and a run scored. Givens then struck out three straight batters to keep the O's down by just one run.

Orioles lose at Chicago: One night after they produced 16 hits the Orioles were held to six in a 4-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Adam Eaton's solo homer in the eighth off Vance Worley scored the game's final run.

Tillman took the loss, allowing seven hits and three runs in six-plus innings. He falls to 14-4 with an ERA of 3.50. This is just the fifth time in his 24 starts where the Orioles lost the game.

Baltimore falls to 62-47 and to 23-30 on the road. The Orioles remain tied for first with Toronto, which lost against Kansas City. They are 1-1 in this series which raps up Sunday with Dylan Bundy (4-3, 3.05 ERA) facing James Shields (3-6, 5.64 ERA).
