After a blown five-run lead Monday and being held to two hits last night, the Orioles today endured more frustration in a 4-3 loss to Minnesota. The Twins completed a three-game sweep at Camden Yards.
Some of the latest frustration occurred in the last of the eighth after the O's had turned a 4-0 early deficit into a winnable 4-3 game. But struggling first baseman Chris Davis was called out on strikes with two men on against Twins lefty Taylor Rogers.
With runners on first and second after a two-out error, Davis got ahead 3-0 in the count. But then he took two straight fastballs for called strikes and struck out looking at an 80 mph curveball that found a lot of the plate.
"That guy is a tough at-bat for a lefty and those are the guys you are going to get late in the game," Davis said. "If I could have done it all over, probably would have taken a hack at the 3-1 pitch. The 3-2 pitch is the best pitch he threw me. You either go after it or you don't. It just kind of locked me up.
"Obviously, haven't been feeling great at the plate lately. Feel like I've been just missing some balls, fouling off some good pitches. It's frustrating on a number of different levels. But we can't hang our heads about it. We have to keep going and try to get after them.
"I was trying to be aggressive right there with a chance to give us the lead. I thought I was in the driver's seat 3-0, but the tide can turn quickly and, you know, it's not my best at-bat of the year."
Davis went 1-for-4 and an inning earlier had hit a solo homer as the Orioles got two homers off José BerrÃos in the seventh to pull within 4-3.
But in the six games on this homestand, Davis went 2-for-24 with 12 strikeouts.
"I felt like I was aggressive all day and had some good pitches to hit," Davis said. "Just popping them up or hitting them off the end of the bat. Finally was able to get one over the outfielder's head. Just kind of the way it's going right now."
The Orioles have lost four in a row and 10 of 13 games. They are 25-20 and have lost four in a row at Camden Yards after going 15-3 in their first 18 home games.
"It's a long season. We want to win every series, particularly those at home," Davis said. "But you have to understand, there is a lot of baseball left to be played. We've still done some good things that you don't need to forget. The defense has really been playing well. It was good to see our pitching staff throw the ball well the last couple of nights. But we've got to start finding ways to put it all together."
On the pitching side, the Twins didn't score after the second inning, but they made the early 4-0 lead stand up. Right-hander Chris Tillman gave up nine hits and the four runs over five innings and 104 pitches.
His command eluded him during a 36-pitch first inning as the Twins scored three runs on four hits. Kennys Vargas had a two-run single and Eduardo Escobar singled in the third run.
"A little bit of everything (was off) early in the game," Tillman said. "I couldn't throw the ball where I wanted to early and every adjustment I tried to make felt like it got worse. I didn't really give them too much of a chance early on. Putting them to sleep out there in the field. You have a couple quick innings it's a completely different ball game.
"Definitely didn't feel like a setback. Physically felt great, as good as I've felt in a long, long time. Just mechanically I was off, timing was off, tempo was off. Positives I'm able to take from the game is I finished with three zeros, I guess."
The Orioles have been swept in a three-game series for the second time in their last four series. The Twins had not swept a three-game series in Baltimore since July 22-24, 1996. But they won four straight here Aug. 20-23, 2015.
Catcher Caleb Joseph talked about how his team just needs some regrouping right now.
"You can't live in the woe is me world and pity on us," he said. "This team is a grinding team. I know people get sick and tired of hearing that. But we're still in the thick of things and these kinds of bumps and bruises happen during the year. It's how you respond to them. Sometimes people want a response in 24 hours. Sometimes it takes time to shake things out. We can go 7-3 in the snap of a finger. We are frustrated as we should be, but it's not hang your head and lay over and die."
