Cuban outfielder Dariel Alvarez won't accompany the Orioles to Toronto this weekend because he's still waiting for the necessary paperwork to obtain his work visa.
Alvarez may be optioned to Single-A Frederick following tonight's game, since the Keys won't make the Carolina League playoffs and he could return after their final game.
The Orioles could choose to place pitcher Miguel Gonzalez on the disabled list with a tendinitis in his right shoulder and elbow, which would allow them to recall a player from Triple-A Norfolk who hasn't been down for the required 10 days. The candidates include outfielder Nolan Reimold and reliever Jorge Rondon.
The Blue Jays are starting left-handers Mark Buehrle and David Price this weekend, and the Orioles may want to replace Alvarez's right-handed bat.
First baseman Christian Walker also is a possibility.
Alvarez is 3-for-12 with a double, one walk and five strikeouts with the Orioles since they selected his contract on Aug. 28.
I wrote earlier today that the Orioles were going to make a roster move before Friday. Alvarez is involved in it.
