The Nationals announced this afternoon that right-hander David Carpenter elected for free agency after the team outrighted him off the 40-man roster to Triple-A Syracuse. Carpenter is now open to sign with another team after making just eight appearances in a Nationals uniform.
Carpenter was acquired from the Yankees for minor league infielder Tony Renda on June 11. But the veteran reliever pitched only six innings, allowing just one run on a homer before landing on the disabled list with inflammation in his throwing shoulder.
The 30-year-old suffered setbacks with his shoulder throughout the rehab process and never made it back. Carpenter figured to contend for a spot on the roster in 2016 as the Nationals work to solidify their bullpen, but today's news seems to end those possibilities.
Over his five-year career, Carpenter is 11-11 with a 3.66 ERA. His best season came in 2013 when he went 4-1 with a 1.78 ERA in 56 appearances for the Braves.
