David Carpenter elects free agency after Nats outright him off 40-man roster

The Nationals announced this afternoon that right-hander David Carpenter elected for free agency after the team outrighted him off the 40-man roster to Triple-A Syracuse. Carpenter is now open to sign with another team after making just eight appearances in a Nationals uniform.

David Carpenter Nationals Yankees.jpg Carpenter was acquired from the Yankees for minor league infielder Tony Renda on June 11. But the veteran reliever pitched only six innings, allowing just one run on a homer before landing on the disabled list with inflammation in his throwing shoulder.

The 30-year-old suffered setbacks with his shoulder throughout the rehab process and never made it back. Carpenter figured to contend for a spot on the roster in 2016 as the Nationals work to solidify their bullpen, but today's news seems to end those possibilities.

Over his five-year career, Carpenter is 11-11 with a 3.66 ERA. His best season came in 2013 when he went 4-1 with a 1.78 ERA in 56 appearances for the Braves.
