Davis chosen for Home Run Derby

Robinson Cano didn't ignore the obvious choice while picking his team for the Home Run Derby. Cano, the captain who made the selections for the American League, announced that Orioles first baseman Chris Davis will be among the four participants. Cano also chose Tigers first baseman Prince Fielder. He hasn't decided on the fourth participant. National League captain David Wright selected Bryce Harper, Carlos Gonzalez and Michael Cuddyer. The Derby will take place next Monday night at Citi Field in New York. ESPN will broadcast all 17 hours of it - a mild exaggeration. Davis, who leads the majors with 33 home runs, told reporters on Sunday that he intended to participate if selected. Orioles coach Einar Diaz is expected to serve as his batting practice pitcher. "If I have the opportunity to, absolutely," Davis said before the series finale in New York. "Just as much as the All-Star Game means to me, as a power hitter, it's something I've watched since I was a little kid and it's something I always wanted to do. If I'm asked, I'm definitely going to do it." Davis, who has matched his career-high home run total from last season, said he isn't worried about the Derby ruining his swing. "I play Home Run Derby every day in BP," he said. "The biggest thing for me is to not go out there and get hurt. I'm not going to swing and try to blow out my back, but every day in BP, we get loose, we work on stuff, and then the last few rounds are, 'All right, let's see who can hit it further.' I've been practicing for a few years." Cal Ripken Jr. won the Derby in 1991 in Toronto, and Miguel Tejada won it in 2004 in Houston. Tejada, a last-minute replacement, set records for homers in one round (15) and overall (27). Other Orioles who have participated include Eddie Murray, Brady Anderson, Rafael Palmeiro and B.J. Surhoff.
