Detwiler going on DL, Harper ailing, Cedeno coming up (updated with quotes)

The injuries continue to mount for the Nationals. Davey Johnson revealed after today's game that left-hander Ross Detwiler, who hasn't started since May 15 because of a right oblique strain, will need to land on the disabled list after feeling tightness in the oblique while working out today. "He went out and was doing some running and playing catch and complained," Johnson said. "Whereas it's better than it was, it's tight and we didn't feel like it was the best thing. ... We're not taking no chances here. We're not rushing and bringing him back." In addition, Bryce Harper could need to miss a couple of days with a sore left knee, Johnson said. Harper, for what it's worth, said he expects to play tomorrow. Harper aggravated his knee injury when sliding into second and third base head-first in the first inning. He later fouled a ball off the knee and was limping and moving gingerly throughout the game before being replaced for a pinch-runner in the seventh. "He's 20 years old, he's a great athlete and he heals pretty quick, but he'll probably be down a few days," Johnson said. "I don't know if there's fluid on the knee or what, but he was certainly gimpy that last at-bat. "I mean, when you keep sliding headfirst, the knee takes the full brunt, really, and that's where it's been a problem." The Nationals will call up left-handed reliever Xavier Cedeno from Triple-A Syracuse to replace Detwiler for the time being. Cedeno, 26, was claimed off waivers from the Astros last month. He's gone 1-0 with a 1.74 ERA in 10 appearances (10 1/3 innings) with Syracuse, striking out 14 and walking three. The Nats can backdate Detwiler's DL stint to May 16, and they feel he could need to miss just one more start before possibly being ready to return to the rotation and start next Sunday. Detwiler, who has an impressive 2.76 ERA through eight starts this season, was scheduled to start Tuesday against the Orioles, and the Nats believed that the lefty was good to go after he made it through a bullpen session yesterday without any issues. Today's setback forced the Nats to change their plans. Johnson didn't reveal who will start for the Nats in Detwiler's place on Tuesday, but he did say that left-handed reliever Zach Duke, who started last Monday, is a candidate. The Nats would not consider moving Jordan Zimmermann up and having him take Tuesday's start on three days' rest, Johnson said.
