Early words from Duquette and Showalter (updated)

Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette and manager Buck Showalter finished up their FanFest forum for season plan members. The session lasted about 30 minutes, and it took 22 before a woman began to ask Showalter about his decision to not use closer Zach Britton in the wild card game.

Showalter cut her off and said, "It wasn't very good, was it?"

The first question of the session pertained to Trey Mancini. Fans really want him to break camp with the team.

Duquette and Showalter suggested that Mancini has a chance to head north despite Mark Trumbo's return.

Showalter said the early off days could allow him to carry only 10 or 11 pitchers. He's eventually going to use 12, but not necessarily in the first few weeks of April. Having the extra position players increases Mancini's odds.

Duquette said the Orioles have made an offer to free agent pitcher Vance Worley. They want the Vanimal back in Baltimore.

MLBTradeRumors.com projected that Worley would make $3.3 million in arbitration. The Orioles non-tendered him and traded for Logan Verrett.

Showalter said Hyun Soo Kim could shed his platoon status in 2017. Kim may get more starts versus left-handed pitching rather than be used strictly against right-handers.

Kim is working out in Sarasota after turning down an offer to play for South Korea in the World Baseball Classic.

Duquette confirmed that pitcher Cody Sedlock, last year's first-round pick out of the University of Illinois, could begin the season at Single-A Frederick after making nine starts at short-season Single-A Aberdeen. Sedlock would skip low Single-A Delmarva.

Asked which road ballparks he wants the most Orioles fans to invade, Showalter listed D.C., Boston and New York. He paused and added that he'd supply a bus for fans to travel to Toronto.

The forum wrapped up with a fan asking whether Adam Jones would be allowed to pie teammates after wins, a practice that the Orioles eliminated due to injury concerns.

It's not happening.

Duquette likened the decision to a parent protecting its children. Showalter said the club worried about players sustaining eye injuries.

Duquette closed the session by again thanking fans for their support and vowing to continue fielding a competitive team.

"We're still a middleweight in a heavyweight division," he said, "but we're still trying to slug it out every night."
