Nationals agree to terms with Asdrúbal Cabrera

The Washington Nationals agreed to terms on a one-year contract with infielder Asdrúbal Cabrera and optioned infielder Adrián Sanchez to Double-A Harrisburg on Tuesday. Additionally, the Nationals designated right-handed pitcher Kyle Barraclough for assignment. Nationals President of Baseball of Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcements.

Cabrera, 33, joins the Nationals after hitting .235 with 15 doubles, 12 home runs, 51 RBI, 38 walks and 45 runs scored in 93 games for the Texas Rangers in 2019. In his final 16 games with the Rangers, Cabrera went 14-for-43 (.326) with a .362 on-base percentage and a .465 slugging percentage (3 2B, HR).

A switch-hitter, Cabrera posted a .429 slugging percentage from the left side of the plate with the Rangers. Of his 27 extra-base hits this season, 22 (11 2B, 11 HR) have come as a left-handed batter.

Cabrera appeared exclusively at third base during his time with Texas, appearing in 93 games (90 starts). In 147 games between the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies in 2018, he spent time at second base (92 G), shortstop (31 G) and third base (22 G).

A veteran of 13 Major League seasons, Cabrera has hit .267 with 361 doubles, 24 triples, 174 home runs, 756 RBI, 90 stolen bases and 805 runs scored in 1,622 career games. He was acquired by the Nationals in 2014 and went on to appear in 49 regular season games and four games in the National League Division Series for Washington.

Sanchez, 28, has hit .222 with one walk and one run scored in 24 games with the Nationals in 2019.

Barraclough, 29, went 1-2 with a 6.66 ERA in 33 games out of Washington's bullpen in 2019.
