O's Game 1 game blog: Dan Straily faces José Berríos (Twins win 6-5)

The Orioles (8-12) and Minnesota Twins (9-7) were rained out at Camden Yards Friday night. Today they play a single-admission doubleheader at 4:05 p.m. to open what is now a two-day, three-game series.

In today's opener, right-hander Dan Straily (1-1, 10.24 ERA) will make his fourth apperance and third start for his new team. Straily threw a strong game last Monday at Boston. Over five innings, he allowed two hits and one run, throwing 86 pitches, 51 for strikes.

Straily does not throw that hard, averaging 90 to 91 mph on his fastball since the 2015 season. In that game at Boston, he threw 42 fastballs that averaged 90.1 mph. He threw 32 changeups and 10 sliders. That was a bit off his script from 2018 with Miami, when he threw his slider 36 percent of the time and his changeup 16 percent. But maybe that changeup in Boston was a key to his getting nine ground balls to six fly balls. In his first two O's games, he produced six grounders and 20 fly balls.

Right-hander José Berríos (2-1, 2.30 ERA) will get the start for the Twins. The 2018 All-Star has produced four quality starts to begin his year and his WHIP of 0.732 leads the American League. Berríos has allowed just 15 hits in 27 1/3 innings (just 4.9 per nine innings) and he has walked five and fanned 28. In four career starts against the Orioles, he is 3-0 with a 3.08 ERA and 0.987 WHIP. Last April 1 at Camden Yards, Berríos fired his first career complete-game shutout, beating the Orioles on a three-hitter.

Minnesota went 6-1 against the Orioles last season, going 1-2 at Camden Yards in the opening series and 4-0 at Target Field in early July. Their only loss came on opening day as Adam Jones hit a walk-off homer off Fernando Rodney in the 11th inning. Since that game, their six-game winning streak is the longest active streak versus any opponent.

Since 2017, the Twins are 11-3 against the O's, their best versus any AL opponent in that span. The Twins are 20-8 in their last 28 against Baltimore, dating to September 2014. They have won three of their last four series at Oriole Park, dating to 2015.

The Orioles are 1-6 at home, 7-6 on the road, 7-9 versus the AL East, 4-6 in day games and 4-6 at night. They are 2-3-1 in six series and 2-4 in series-opening games. They are 6-3 when they scored first.

With Thursday's 6-5 win in 11 innings against Tampa Bay, the Orioles improved to 3-0 in one-run games. They scored just three hits in the first two games of that series, but produced six runs on 15 hits, going 5-for-14 with runners in scoring position, in the series finale.

Andrew Cashner went five innings, allowing two runs on 98 pitches that night. He became just the third O's starter to throw 90 or more pitches this year. The Orioles have just two quality starts and have gone 15 consecutive games without one.

Twins win in the opener: In a game where each team hit three homers, the Orioles went 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position and lost Game 1 to Minnesota 6-5.

Dwight Smith Jr. hit a two-run shot and Renato Núñez hit a solo as they went back-to-back in the Baltimore third. Pedro Severino's solo homer in the sixth was his second in two games.

Jimmy Yacabonis replaced Straily to start the sixth and allowed three runs in two-thirds of an inning as the Orioles fell behind 6-3. Straily allowed three runs and six hits over five innings on 98 pitches.

O's pitchers have allowed 49 homers on the year and have given up 31 in eight home games. They've allowed three or more homers seven times on the year and six times at home.

The Orioles (8-13) have lost eight of their last 11 games. They fall to 1-7 at home. In tonight's second game right-hander Alex Cobb (0-0, 3.18 ERA) pitches against lefty Martín Pérez (1-0, 5.02 ERA).
