Sánchez pitches simulated game (Nats win 12-10)

Manager Davey Martinez updated the status of right-hander Aníbal Sánchez, who is on the injured list recovering from a left hamstring strain.

"He threw a sim game," Martinez said. "Forty-one pitches, went really well. He ran after he threw. Next hurdle will be he will throw a side and then we will reevaluate then.

"Before he comes back he's got to do PFPs (pitchers' fielding practice), cover first, do the whole gamut, because it was a hamstring issue so we want to make sure he is ready."

The Nationals have not announced Sunday's starter. But that is too soon for Sánchez to return.

"We will see," Martinez said of Sánchez's next step. "Personally, I would like to see him maybe go out for a rehab (assignment) to make sure he throws about 75 pitches. Today, he went over his first hurdle and it was really good."

Update: In the first inning, Garrett Cooper singled with one out for the Marlins. Then Brian Anderson greeted Nationals right-hander Kyle McGowin rudely with a two-run shot over the left field wall. It was his fifth homer of the season.

Adam Eaton came right back and hit his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot in the bottom of the first off of Pablo López.

After one inning, the Marlins lead the Nats 2-1.

Update II: The Marlins added two more in the second inning on three hits and a walk. López smacked a broken-bat two-run single to center field.

After two innings, the Marlins lead the Nats 4-1.

Update III: Trea Turner committed two errors in the third inning, but McGowin was able to strike out Jorge Alfaro to get out of the jam.

Anthony Rendon crushed a two-run shot, his 10th of the season, over the right-center field wall to even the game in the third. The Nats had five hits in the inning. Victor Robles struck out with the bases loaded to end the rally.

After three innings, the Nats and Marlins are tied at 4-4.

Update IV: The Marlins regained the lead in the fourth thanks to a Curtis Granderson solo homer, his sixth of the season. McGowin finished four innings, allowed five runs on six hits, including two homers, with one walk and two strikeouts. He threw 80 pitches, 47 for strikes.

After four innings, the Marlins lead the Nats 5-4.

Update V: The Marlins scored three runs in the fifth off of Joe Ross. Harold Ramirez smacked an RBI double and Alfaro added a two-run single.

Mid-fifth, the Marlins lead the Nats 8-4.

Update VI: Rendon doubled and Soto singled in the fifth. Matt Adams' double play groundout scored Rendon.

After five innings, the Marlins lead the Nats 8-5.

Update VII: The Nats got another run back in the sixth. Turner went with a pitch and pushed an RBI single into right field. He is 2-for-4 on the night with a run and an RBI.

After six innings, the Marlins lead the Nats 8-6.

Update VIII: The Nats come back to tie the game again thanks to a two-run double from Robles.

After seven innings, the Nats and the Marlins are even at 8-8.

Update IX: Castro's RBI single off of Kyle Barraclough put the Marlins ahead 9-8 in the eighth.

Update X: The Nats' big hitters flexed their muscles in the eighth. Soto connected on a three-run shot for his eighth homer of the season to right-center field. The blast came on an 100 mph offering from Marlins reliever Tayron Guerrero. Matt Adams responded with a solo shot, his fourth on the season and 100th of his career, as the Nats went back-to-back.

In the top of the ninth, Alfaro crushed a solo homer off of Nats closer Sean Doolittle. Miguel Rojas singled, but then Robles made a diving catch in center field for the first out. Granderson flew out to center field. After Cooper singled, Anderson grounded out to second base to end the game.

Final score: Nats 12, Marlins 10. The Nats end their five-game losing streak.
